Judge strikes down age limits on morning after pill

A federal judge ordered that the most common morning after pill be made available over the counter for all ages, instead of requiring a prescription for girls 16 and younger. But his acidly worded decision raises a broader question about whether a cabinet secretary can decide on a drug's availability for reasons other than its safety and effectiveness.

A global mission to fight sexual violence against women
The New York Times
Just as the pressing call for an end to violence against women resounds around the world, it is also making itself heard in Washington. The U.S. Congress passed the expanded Violence Against Women Act it had held up for a year and a half, and, separately, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., went to war against sexual assault in the U.S. military, holding the first Senate hearings on this staggering problem in nearly 10 years. Outside Capitol Hill, in the beehive of women-centered nonprofits like Vital Voices Global Partnership, the drive to end violence against women has been moving at varying speeds and with varying degrees of success.

New approach helps sexual assault victims recall details
U.S. Department of Defense
A new approach to interviewing sexual assault victims is gleaning more information about the crimes and leading to greater numbers of offender prosecutions. At the End Violence Against Women international conference, Russell Strand, chief of the behavioral sciences education and training division for the Army's Military Police School at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., spoke with American Forces Press Service about the new Defense Department-backed procedure to investigate sexual assaults.
