April's President's Corner

Greeting Members!

In early April the IAFN Board of Directors gathered in Virginia for a two-day strategic planning meeting, an annual event. The day prior to the meeting, members of the Government Affairs Committee joined us for a "lobbying day" on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., organized by IAFN's lobbyist, Patrick Cooney of The Federal Group. While American members visited aides to our respective House and Senate representatives, Canadian board members visited the Canadian Embassy. Read the entire column here.

Study examines condom use during sexual assaults

A new study found that suspect age, alcohol use, and weapon use all influence whether a suspect uses a condom during sexual assault. "Condom use during sexual assault isn't something that has been studied in depth in the past," explained Eryn Nicole O'Neal, a doctoral student in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice Arizona State University. "We didn't really have a strong grasp on prevalence rates and the issues that contribute to suspects using condoms."

Telemedicine Company HealthSpot rolls out kiosks in select health systems, raises Series C

Since debuting its telehealth kiosk at CES in January, three-year-old HealthSpot has raised at least $10.4 million in Series C funding and is working on building a national provider network so that it can set up its primary care kiosks in retail pharmacies.

Audrie Pott's parents ask for classmates who saw photo of alleged sexual assault to come forward
ABC News
The parents of Audrie Pott, the California teen who hanged herself days after an alleged sexual assault, implored any students who might have seen a photo of the incident to come forward. "The student newspaper reported that 10 kids had seen the photo; we'd like to talk to those 10 kids," said Larry Pott, Audrie's father.

Increasing demand for emergency nursing

An ER is also open to all patients to get immediate medical attention instead having to wait for doctor appointments.
