Money for the Department of Public Safety to help with backlog of rape kits

Thousands of evidence kits collected from rape victims that have sat untested for years in Texas can now be analyzed, thanks to an $11 million budget appropriation earmarked for the Texas Department of Public Safety. The line-item financing disbursement was passed as part of the state’s biennial budget during the regular 83rd legislative session. It follows the 2011 approval of related legislation filed by state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth.

Statistics show alarming rise in rape and violence against women in North Kivu

Government commits to combating sexual crimes

Twenty-two sexual offenses courts will open this year after a task team found there was a clear need to resuscitate the dedicated courts to help combat rape, Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said. A further 35 such courts would be set up within the next three years, he told reporters in Pretoria.

New bill to emancipate South African women: Xingwana

Afghan civilian deaths increase with more women and child victims

Violence against civilians has risen by almost a quarter in Afghanistan as international forces hand security to Afghans, the United Nations said in a report. The report, presented by the Human Rights Director for the UN in Afghanistan, said the number of dead and injured civilians had increased by 23 percent in the first six months of 2013, compared to the same period last year.
