Sexual assault survivor creates program to help students deal with difficult situation
A woman raped 23 years ago as a college freshman has turned her life around and is now speaking to professionals who handle sexual assault cases. She’s created a program to help high school and college students deal with difficult situations. Katie Koestner went from rape victim to survivor, and now she speaks to police officers, detectives, teachers and counselors about her experience and the experiences of other rape survivors across the country.
Defense bill aimed at sexual assault crisis faces challenge in Senate
A comprehensive defense policy bill that aims to deal with the epidemic of sexual assault in the military is heading to the Senate, where it could get slowed by Republican outrage over majority Democrats' limits on GOP power. The House overwhelmingly passed the legislation, 350-69, the last roll call vote before the House adjourned for the year. The strong bipartisan vote puts pressure on the Senate to back the legislation without changes even though Senate Republicans are furious with their inability to offer any amendments to the massive bill.
Need for cultural change from childhood to end violence against women
India is marking the first anniversary of the high-profile gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman on a Delhi bus this week with candle-lit vigils, art exhibitions, dance performances and televised discussions on gender violence. The savagery of the crime - the student was beaten, tortured and raped by six assailants before being dumped on a highway to die – shook the country's consciousness and triggered unprecedented public protests and national debate about violence against women in this deeply patriarchal country.
Violence against women costs Tennessee $886 million
On May 3, 2013, the Tennessee Economic Council on Women (TECW) and BPW of Cumberland County co-sponsored a hearing in Crossville addressing the economic impact of domestic violence and human trafficking. This hearing was one of nine hearings held throughout the state beginning in January and ending in June. Several local officials, community members and business people participated in the local hearing. Results of that study were released at the TECW Summit held in Nashville on Oct. 27-28, 2013 and produced some alarming findings.
Injuries to rape survivors chilling
Times of India
A year after Nirbhaya's gang-rape case, has the medical response to such cases got any better? As TOI investigated this, we came across shocking revelations on a number of rape cases reported at one single hospital in the last two years. Safdarjung Hospital, where Nirbhaya was admitted, treated 310 rape survivors in two years, from December 2011 to December 2013. Of this, 24 were minors less than 10 years. There were at least 169 patients of the age group of 11-20 years and 117 rape survivors who were aged 20 and above.
A year after rape case, a sense of change in India
The Wall Street Journal
The media called her the "Park Street victim" — a 37-year-old woman who said she was gang-raped in Kolkata. Ashamed and depressed, she hid her identity in public for many months.
She has since come forward, encouraged by the overwhelming public revulsion against a fatal attack on another woman one year ago. That crime, on a bus in Delhi, and the publicity that followed have prompted a surge in the reporting of offenses that women in India once suffered in silence and broken the taboo on the discussion of violence against them.
