IGDA 2014 BoD election: Call for nominations

The call for nominations for the IGDA Board of Directors has begun. Anyone interested in running for the Board of Directors should download the Board Nomination packet from the elections page here: http://www.igda.org/elections2014. Nomination certificates, along with the names of 10 members supporting your nomination are due by 23:59 PST(UTC-8) on 1 Feb. Voting begins 21 Feb. with new directors taking office on 1 April.

REMINDER: Any individual wishing to participate in these elections must be a voting eligible member by the close of nominations on 1 Feb. Please note: student members are not eligible to vote.

Excerpt from "Game Design Aspect of the Month: Project Spark: A Game to Create Other Games" by Trae Bailey:

Game development has been a life-long goal for many game enthusiasts since the birth of the gaming industry. The problem is, with each passing year, that dream has been complicated due to the rapidly increasing standards of video games. However, with the recent proliferation of indie game development, many more individuals have decided to pursue their passion for game development. The good news does not end there; in attempts to inspire more individuals, a game has been created that allows users to create other games.

Meet Kaitlyn Burnell, IGDA WIG SIG's January profile! Kaitlyn is a senior programmer based out of San Diego, Calif. Kaitlyn has worked on titles such as "The Last of Us" and "Eve Online," and briefly held the speed run world record for Super Metroid!

Mobile gaming could drive entire video game industry to $100 billion in revenue by 2017

Mobile gaming is growing so fast that it's expanding the traditional video game industry far beyond its old borders. Tim Merel, the managing director of game investment bank Digi-Capital, issued a report today that predicts mobile games could drive the whole game software industry's revenues to $100 billion by 2017, making it one of the most lucrative sectors for entertainment and software. He said the mobile and online game sectors could grow at a compound annual growth rate of 23.6 percent to $60 billion by 2017.

The Immersion headset will teach you how not to rage at video games

As gamers, we're no stranger to frustration. Whether an incompetent teammate in League of Legends or a particularly brutal segment of Ninja Gaiden, some games can be downright infuriating. One man thinks he might have a solution (albeit one that might lead to a slew of broken controllers itself). He calls it Immersion. The current prototype makes use of a modded Xbox controller hooked up to a biometrics headset. This headset uses an optical pulse sensor to record the user's heart rate as they play, keeping track of color changes in the user's ear tissue to approximate their pulse.

Tribeca Film Festival to explore the transformative potential of video games

Games for Change will host their 11th annual festival "as part of the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T. In addition, the Games for Change Arcade, which is open to the public, will be held at the Tribeca Film Festival Family Festival Street Fair, taking place on Sat., April 26." The festival, which focuses on social impact games will take place on April 22-24, 2014 at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Games for Change is New York City's largest gaming event.
