3 weeks remaining: Take IGDA's Developer Satisfaction Survey
IGDA
In partnership with M2 Research and the University of Western Ontario, the IGDA launched its annual Developer Satisfaction Survey to update our knowledge of the current demographic composition of the video game industry, to understand general quality of life and to gauge developers’ overall satisfaction with the state of the game industry and where it’s going.

The results of this survey will be released by E3 (early June 2014) and will be used to assess the overall state of developers’ quality of life, diversity in the industry, and job satisfaction in order to inform the IGDA on areas of action. For 2014 only, the survey also includes additional questions that reflect our more in-depth Quality of Life Survey which is conducted in 5 year intervals (2004, 2009, etc.).

Please help us succeed!
  1. Take the survey: http://bit.ly/IGDA-DSS2014.
  2. Share the survey to your colleagues and networks!

Sponsor highlight: Intel's game developer contest, Level Up
IGDA
What do Rami Ismail, Chris Avellone, Wolfgang Engel, Tim Schafer, Nathan Vella, Chris Taylor, and Marc Saltzman have in common?

They’re all judges for Intel’s game developer contest, now in its sixth year!

Level Up seeks submissions of Windows games — they can be alphas, betas, vertical slices, whatever! — by 2 June. There are no fees to enter and developers retain all rights to their games. With 11 prize categories to compete in and thousands of dollars in cash prizes — and the chance for winning game demos to be hosted on Steam — there’s no reason not to compete!

This year in particular, Intel is looking for games that take advantage of the touch screen and convertible features of 2 in 1 devices (such as laptops that convert to tablets). That means touch screen, accelerometer, and other features.

Past winners of Level Up include games such as Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians from THREAKS, FORCED from Beta Dwarf, Cube & Star: A Love Story from Doppler Interactive, and Splice from Cipher Prime Studios.

Remember, the deadline to enter is 2 June. Don’t risk forgetting — submit today! Learn more: www.intel.com/software/levelup

IGDA Perspectives content spotlight and April call for contributions
IGDA
Excerpt from “Games for Change Through Emergent Gameplay” by Michael Bertrand:

The debate about games being art is and has been over for a long time. They are, just like any other artistic medium that can express an idea or story. Despite this, games have struggled to be a force for strong messages and change in the world.

Read the full story in the March issue of the IGDA Perspectives newsleter, Games for Change.
The IGDA Perspectives Newsletter is accepting contributions for its April edition, GDC 2014 Galore!

Meet the people improving video games 1 line at a time
Polygon
In a game like Mass Effect 3, more than 600 variables are tracked. Every line of dialog the player chooses to speak, every character the player romances, every character the player doesn't romance, every encounter they have, every encounter they don't have — these details are carefully noted so the game can respond to the player's actions accordingly.
