How Valve's paid mod program imploded in 4 days
Gamasutra
Recently, Valve Software made the decision to launch what might have been the most groundbreaking initiative of the year: to facilitate a way for modders — talented, typically amateur devs and artists who create and share modifications of PC games — to get paid for their work. Instead, the game industry got one of the biggest 180s of the year.

Wireless glove adds touch to VR video games
Engadget
While Oculus, Valve, Samsung and HTC are all looking to captialize on the resurgence of VR, their solutions all focus on what we can see and hear. That's more than enough to immerse you in a virtual world, but what if you want to interact with the objects within them? Some companies have already taken on the challenge, but researchers at RICE University have created a new haptic glove that uses air to inflate bladders underneath your fingers to offer a real sense of touch.

ESPN reverses course on video games, embraces what was once
'not a sport'

Awful Announcing
ESPN made history April 26 by airing a video game tournament on ESPN2, but it never would have happened seven months ago. The Worldwide Leader put Heroes of the Dorm, a collegiate Heroes of the Storm competition, on its secondary network in a move that contradicted comments made by ESPN President John Skipper last September.

New York congressman introduces Anti-Swatting Act
GamePolitics.com
Congressman Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., recently introduced a bill in the House of Representatives to stiffen the penalties for those convicted of "swatting." Engel, who is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, introduced the bill April 27. The Anti-Swatting Act will enhance penalties for people "who falsify their caller ID information to mislead law enforcement." While details on the penalties are not available as of this writing, the bill would also force those convicted of related crimes to pay restitution to law enforcement and emergency services affected by the crime.

The hidden politics of video games
POLITICO Magazine
Games and gamers inevitably reflect the values of their times. If today’s video games are laden with violence and frenetic with high-tech weapons, that is the nature of the society that created them. But do games change their societies? Rivers of ink have been spilled over whether violence in video games leads to the real thing. Whether the link is true or not, a genre that started with harmlessly batting around a virtual ping-pong ball in the 1970s game Pong, now requires games to carry age ratings to shield children from virtual gore. Some politicians have even called for warning labels that would treat video games like tobacco and alcohol.

10 classic video games hidden in other games as Easter Eggs
What Culture
Finding secrets and Easter Eggs is one the most fun aspects of any video game. Although the Internet now means that the majority of hidden gems are shared with millions as soon as they are discovered, in the early years of the industry this wasn’t the case. It meant aside from buying a strategy guide or through word of mouth, finding a secret in one of your games was a genuine "wow" moment, and this feeling of surprise was never greater than when you discovered an entire extra game hidden away.
