Last Call — Contribute to the Developer Economic Survey from VisionMobile
IGDA
How will IoT play out in your ecosystem? Is HTML vs. Native still relevant? Are you using AWS, Azure or Google Cloud? Which are the hottest IoT verticals? These are some of the questions that our friends at VisionMobile address through their Developer Economics research, so take their quick survey and make your voice heard.

Participating is easy – take the 10-minute Developer Skill Census survey and enter a draw to win prizes such as an iPhone 6, an Apple Sports Watch, an Oculus Rift Dev Kit, and many more. A free chapter from one of VisionMobile’s premium paid reports will also be given immediately upon completion, taking a close look at app profits & costs.

Now in its 9th edition, the Developer Economics research program tracks developer sentiment across platforms, revenues, apps, tools, APIs, segments and regions. This is the most ambitious developer survey to date, spanning across mobile, IoT, desktop and Cloud. The key insights from the survey will be given back to the community as a free download in late July. So tap into the same pool of knowledge that enterprises like Intel, Google, and Amazon swim in and get a chance to win some prizes while you’re at it.

27 million watched this video game tournament — matching NCAA basketball final audience
MarketWatch
If you think video games are a nerdy pastime for out-of-shape boys gathered around laptops in their parents’ basements sipping on cola, you are sorely mistaken. Competitive gaming, known as electronic sports, or eSports, is a global phenomenon valued in the billions of dollars. The industry is anchored by what is referred to as multiplayer online battle arena games, like League of Legends, where one or several players face off in a digital arena. Watching people play professionally has been popular in Asia for years, but it’s now also gaining steam in the U.S.

Can video games solve public health problems?
U.S. News & World Report
The objective of the Internet-based Re-Mission 2 games is simple: Kill cancer. The games — six in all — arm players with weapons like "chemo bombs" and antibiotics to fight the leukemia monster, destroy bacteria, rescue healthy cells and annihilate tumors, all while collecting points and conquering levels. And for players who are battling cancer themselves, winning in the virtual world could have profound implications for their health in the real one. Researchers at HopeLab, the California nonprofit that created the game, say teens and kids who play it understand their disease better and show improved adherence to their medications as a result.

Challenges of making games about social issues
Gamasutra
Video games can be a distraction from our real life. They help us forget our worries and concerns, giving us a means of enjoyment; a temporary feeling of happiness and excitement. However, that does not mean video games have to be without substance. For instance, compare the movie "Transformers" to "The Hours." The former is fun and exciting — there's nothing wrong with that. But the latter has heart, and makes you think — it addresses real issues and gives you a different perspective on them.

Texas slashes government incentives for video games and film
Gamasutra
News has come that Texas' film and video game incentive program has been slashed — down to just $32 million for the next two years, shared across both industries. In the last four years, incentives totaled $150 million, The Texas Tribune reports. Why the drop? Both the Tribune and Texas Public Radio chalk it up to increased scrutiny from politicians — and infighting between the film and game industries. According to reports, the film industry wanted to carve games out into a separate deal, and lobbied to that effect.
