Keep calm and play on: Video games that track your heart rate
MIT Technology Review
In a virtual house, you are trapped in an oven, desperately trying to avoid being burned alive. The only way to escape is to take a deep breath, relax, and accept that there are far more disturbing scenarios left to come. In Nevermind, an indie horror game that will officially be released later this month, players strap on a heart-rate monitor and strive to keep their nerves in check while facing increasingly creepy scenes. Stay calm and cool, and the puzzles progress smoothly. Become even a little jumpy, and the game adds an extra layer of difficulty, such as a vision-obscuring screen of static that only dissipates once the player chills out.

The secrets to scrappiness: Fighting to survive as an indie studio
Gamasutra
Tanya X Short, director of Canadian independent studio Kitfox Games, writes, "When we were starting Kitfox and talking to business mentors, we would often receive a lot of conflicting advice. Expert after expert would come in to our studio, look at us or our game, and tell us the exact opposite of what the previous expert said: Go big, go small, aim for quality, fail faster, target an audience, follow your heart, measure retention, think out of the box, and so on and so forth. This eventually inspired 50 Steps to Indie Success."

Female video game characters were reimagined with 'normal' bodies — and the contrasts are shocking

What would Lara Croft look like if she had the average woman's body? Eating disorder information and treatment hub Bulimia.com decided to "reverse Photoshop" popular female video game characters to give them more realistic physiques — and the results are pretty shocking. "It seems video games are home to ultra-slim waistlines only," reads the site.

Why 2 Supreme Court justices played a violent video game to help decide a major case
The Washington Post
It’s hard to picture Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, a former solicitor general of the United States as well as a former dean of Harvard Law School, hunched over at a video game console, controller clenched in her hands, playing a violent video game. It is harder still to imagine her opponent, Justice Stephen Breyer, sitting beside her engaged in the virtual combat, all under the august roof of the United States Supreme Court. But it happened.

Pamela's newest trailer blends BioShock with STALKER, coming to Steam Greenlight
Polygon
Four people. That's how many bodies it took to turn heads at this year's Game Developers Conference. That's how many artists it took to make the world of Pamela, an upcoming first-person survival horror game set on a futuristic island colony called Eden. Four people, whose hopes were riding on a very early trailer, playing on a workstation that was practically buried inside the larger Unity booth in San Francisco. Talking with the team recently, what makes their work so much more remarkable is that most of them have never even made a game before.
