Nathan Vella, president and co-founder of Capy Games, has become a voice for the indies. As a publisher of indie titles, he spoke about the increasing difficulties that indie game studios are having in the app stores and on the web and what they can do about it.
Addressing the Gaming Insiders event in San Francisco recently, Vella said that game developers often focus on a single platform as a favorite target for a game.
When arcades were a powerful presence in gaming, boss battles were, amongst other things, a way to keep players from coasting through games. Today, they often include far more nuance and drama. They can be hours-long, involving multiple stages and story reveals. Bosses "can define a world, give it character and allow players to have a focal point when discussing moments within the game," says Kynan Pearson, creative director at Bluepoint Games.
When we think about player expression, our minds usually go straight toward multiplayer games, where people can type in the chat window, choose their outfits, play emotes and voice chat — all methods by which players can express themselves.
Any time you create a multiplayer game system that lets players express themselves, you have to choose whether you allow negative expressions. What emotes do you create? What words or symbols does your chat filter allow?
There are only 17 or so titles that you can’t broadcast on Twitch, the popular streaming service that was bought earlier this year by Amazon. Not shocking at all is that these 17 games deal with sexual themes or adult content that contains over the top violence. On the violent end of the spectrum is Hatred, while games like Rinse and Repeat represent the sexually driven end of the content spectrum.
Virtual reality is having a major moment.
Since Facebook bought Oculus VR for $2 billion in 2014, the technology and its precursor 360-degree video seem to be everywhere.
Facebook unleashed 360-video in News Feed recently, where users can move their device or mouse to personally control the camera shot while watching videos from select media outlets such as VICE and the Discovery Channel.
Numerous data breaches have hit gaming networks and publishers over the past few years. You’re probably aware of the PlayStation Network’s problems, as well as the attacks that affected EA gamers and even GOG.com has had its share of account hijacks. The fact is that when it comes to online games, attackers know that they can gain information about players, from personal data to banking information, and what standing and status those players have in the in-game world.
