IGDA Foundation Update: From the Chair After Six Months
IGDA
"One of the most significant challenges we face is one of PR. Recently the Ice Bucket challenge united people around the world and from all walks of life to raise awareness and funds for ALS, and whilst the IGDA Foundation may have more niche appeal, this has certainly provided an amount of food for thought as to how we might try to emulate that success. In recent months we’ve made great steps forward in terms of our messaging — most notably by revamping this website but also developing other streams like a Donor Newsletter, a Twitter account and our brand new Facebook page, but we are still a long way from our 'viral moment'."

Luke Dicken, Chair of the IGDA Foundation, blogged his thoughts on the last six months of work he’s put into the group. He talks about how he needs support and is excited for the opportunities ahead. Read his post here.

Please Take the Game Outcomes Project Survey
Game Outcomes Project
The Game Outcomes Project is a first-of-its-kind experiment to statistically evaluate game development efforts across hundreds of game teams and glean insights as to how teamwork, culture, leadership, and production practices contribute to the success or failure of game development projects. Currently, there’s little or no actual data on the effectiveness of different production methodologies, crunch/overtime, or team size impact the success or failure of projects in the game industry.

We hope to change that! With your help, we hope to gain insights at to what factors produce the greatest risks in game development and what best practices development teams can follow to better manage the risks they face. If you've ever worked on a game as part of a team, then please help us out by taking the survey here.

This study was designed by an independent team of game developers, including several from the Production SIG of the International Game Developers' Association (IGDA) and an advisor from the Wharton School of Business. The Game Outcomes Project is not affiliated with the annual IGDA Developer Satisfaction Survey or any other survey or organization.

Perspectives Highlight: Female Players Want Female Playable Characters
IGDA
Let’s face it, most of these games are fantasies, even if based on real-life historical eras… In an idealized society of the future, a fantasy world, and even in a historical setting, we can surely see that writers have the option to include strong female protagonists. And in real life, even though they may have been marginalized or overlooked, women have been in combat situations throughout history. As Dan Golding points out, the most famous assassin in the time period of Assassin’s Creed Unity was a woman. Our world history is not just "the history of men."

This Perspectives Highlight comes from designer Sande Chen. In it, she writes about giving players the option of gender in games. Check it out here.

Feminist Video Game Critic Anita Sarkeesian Cancels Utah Lecture after Threat
The Washington Post
Feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian was forced to cancel a talk that would have taken place Oct. 15 at Utah State University after the university received a terror threat from someone claiming they would commit “the deadliest school shooting in American history” if Sarkeesian gave her lecture. The threat, emailed to Utah State staff by someone purporting to be a student, stated, "I have at my disposal a semi-automatic rifle, multiple pistols, and a collection of pipe bombs," according to the Standard Examiner.

You Can Create a Hit Video Game About Anything, Even Making Toast
NPR
Flinging birds at pigs and moving jelly beans around a little screen are not human instincts. Game designers create the urge to do those things for hours at a time. "From the way the games are designed to help us start playing the game, to the way they keep us coming back to the game, to how they involve our friends in the game — all of these things have underpinnings in consumer psychology," says game consultant Nir Eyal.

Video Games Could Make Kids Better, Healthier People
The Washington Post
For all the talk about how video games rot our kids’ brains, there’s evidence that they can be used for good. There’s mounting data that specially designed video games can increase knowledge and change behavior in youth. In particular, they can have a positive influence on the way kids think and act about their health. That’s good news because 97 percent of young Americans play computer, Internet, mobile or console games, and 50 percent play daily.

A #GamerGate Target Wants Twitter to Make Harassment Harder
Bloomberg Businessweek
The Twitter account used to harass game developer Brianna Wu has been removed from the site. But Wu, who fled her home recently after facing multiple rape and death threats, believes Twitter needs to do more to come to terms with how it enables misogynist abuse on its platform. "Many women are frustrated with Twitter’s policies," she says. "It makes it very easy to create an account — and then create another account — to harass people with."

The Video Game That Rewrites the 1500-Year-Old Rules of Chess
The Atlantic
Chess is quite a game. The game. Chess is so old and so esteemed it’s often used as a point of legitimacy for other things. If you have a lengthy discussion about "Street Fighter," critical or not, you’ve started a countdown to an inevitable "like chess" comparison. It’s easy to pick up and yet so hard to master that becoming the best at it gets you called a prodigy. It’s dramatic, it’s intensive, and largely seen as balanced. "Why fix what isn’t broken?" says 2 percent of the world’s coffee mugs. In any case, the video game XYQ4 is an attempt to break chess just to see what happens.
