We live in a world with an overwhelming amount of content. In 2015 alone, enough games have come out to keep you busy for the rest of your life. This has prompted a developer to build a new site where studios and the gamers that would love them can find each other. Playfield.io is now live, and it’s promising to put a dent in PC gaming’s discoverability problem. It works by providing developers with a homepage for their games, where they can upload photos, videos, and all of their social feeds in one place.
Procedural generation presents a big challenge for players and developers alike. The rewards of creating a game that can theoretically spawn an infinite amount of levels is obvious, but designing a system that can reliably create worlds and missions that are balanced, rewarding, and consistently engaging is easier said than done.
What’s the opposite of play?
Your first instinct is probably to say: "work." But there’s another, better answer to the same question that could be the key to developing powerful new treatments in the field of mental health.
Back in the ‘90s, Chris Metzen had an idea for a new game. For the still-blooming Blizzard Entertainment, these were formative years. There was Warcraft as of 1994, but there was no World of Warcraft. There was talk about doing more real-time strategy, as the company was arguably getting good at it, and a keen interest in heading into space.
