NXA Studios Presents... A Focus on Character(s)
Dwayne Mason, NXA Studios
Some things we do fairly well - Characters are not one of those things...

Everybody is good at something... Well, most everyone. Some are good at several different things, while others become truly great at one thing in particular.

Rarely does this happen by accident - typically it is the result of a determined effort combined with drive, practice, patience - and a desire to become the best.

IGDA Perspectives Says Farewell — Final Issue
"The IGDA Perspectives newsletter has been a highlighted feature for IGDA members and I’m honored to have been involved," writes Perspectives Editor-in-Chief Elizabeth LaPensée. "The newsletter is really thanks to the work of Wendy Despain, who saw the incredible talents of Cat Wendt and the potential in me. In the beginning, we were game writers who couldn’t stop talking about game writing. Ha ha! So we began the IGDA Game Writers Quarterly with the help of John Hendersen. It was such a hit that we expanded to print issues for the Game Developers Conference. And it’s been going ever since with a new theme every month. Along the way, we’ve kept the heart and warmth of that inspiration thanks to all of the contributors over the years."

This issue marks the final edition of IGDA Perspectives. There’s a lot of new things coming from the IGDA in terms of editorial content, but Perspectives was our highlight for the last five years. We still have great new content for this issue, but we also have a section highlighting some of the best content over the years. Thanks to Beth and Cat for working on the newsletter for the last five years. You’ve been incredible!

Twine, the video game technology for all
The New York Times
Perhaps the most surprising thing about GamerGate, the culture war that continues to rage within the world of video games, is the game that touched it off. "Depression Quest," created by the developers Zoe Quinn, Patrick Lindsey and Isaac Schankler, isn’t what most people think of as a video game at all. Aside from occasional fuzzy Polaroid pictures that appear at the top of the screen, "Depression Quest" is a purely text-based game that proceeds from screen to screen through simple hyperlinks, inviting players to step into the shoes of a person suffering from clinical depression. Quinn decided to make "Depression Quest" through an increasingly popular program called Twine.

Apple changes labeling on 'free-to-play' games in App Store
Apple has kicked the "free" label in its App Store to the curb. Popular free-to-play apps that offer in-game microtransactions will now be labeled with "Get" instead of "Free." While Apple has confirmed the changes with Re/Code, the company hasn't said anything else about why it made the changes in the first place.

Why celebrities like Lindsay Lohan are suing video game studios
In July 2014, Lindsay Lohan sued Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games, claiming that "Grand Theft Auto V" featured a character who is allegedly based on the Mean Girls actress. According to the suit, filed in the New York Supreme Court, the cover of the game depicts a bikini-clad woman who bears a striking resemblance to he. And the game itself apparently consists of more similarities, including the fact that the character runs from paparazzi, takes cover in the Chateau Marmont and incorporates Lohan's "image, likeness, clothing, outfits, [Lohan's] clothing line products, ensemble in the form of hats, hair style, sunglasses [and] jean shorts."
