IGLTA announces annual travel honors

IGLTA Foundation extends scholarship deadline to March 25
IGLTA
The IGLTA Foundation is providing five scholarships to attend the 31st Annual Global Convention in Madrid this May. Now in its second year, the Building Bridges Scholarship program was created to support the next generation of LGBT travel professionals. The program will provide all-expense-paid trips to Madrid (including conference registration) for three hospitality/tourism students, one individual representing a small travel business, and one individual representing a destination or event in an emerging LGBT market. Apply online by March 25 at igltafoundation.org/scholarships.

    IGLTA continues to confirm its leading role in LGBT travel at ITB Berlin, billed as the world's leading travel trade fair. Now in its fourth year, the Gay & Lesbian Travel Pavilion at ITB moved this year to the Caribbean Hall (3.1) and nearly doubled in size to more than 400 square meters, with flagship partner IGLTA occupying about 20 percent of the total space. Companies sharing the stand with IGLTA included: Florida Keys & Key West (U.S.); Pink Vibgyor & Irregular Tours (India); Ofakim Travel and Congresses LTD (Israel); World Rainbow Hotels (U.K.); China Star Ltd. (China); Fort Lauderdale CVB (U.S.); Here Media (U.S.); and Worldpride Toronto (Canada).     New York City mayor names new head of NYC & Company tourism board

    New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that Fred Dixon will be the new chief executive of the city's official tourism and marketing organization, NYC & Company. Dixon took over as interim CEO of NYC & Company following previous CEO George Fertitta, who announced his departure in December to join outgoing mayor Michael Bloomberg's consulting company.

    US, Canada, Mexico to develop 'trusted traveler' program

    Frequent travelers into and out of the United States, Canada and Mexico might soon find it easier and quicker to do so. The Airports Council International-North America and the Canadian Airports Council announced that the United States, Canada and Mexico will develop a North America-wide trusted traveler program, similar to the joint U.S.-Canada Nexus program and other trusted traveler programs in North America and around the world.

    A great start to 2014 for Copenhagen airport

    Denmark's principal aviation gateway has had a great start to 2014 and is set to continue with ambitious plans for growth over coming months and years — growth that will rely on more routes and continuing profits for the airport. Copenhagen Kastrup Airport, located close to the Danish capital and a short distance from the road crossing to neighboring Sweden, handled 24 million passengers in 2013, an increase of 3.1 percent. The airport is looking increase its capacity toward doubling the number of passengers to around 40 million per year, becoming the "strongest hub in Northern Europe."
