When it comes to LGBTQ rights, most of us consider European countries to be among the world's most progressive. European Union legislation protects against employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, same-sex sexual activity is legal in all 28 EU member states, and 22 of those countries support same-sex civil unions or full marriage equality. Naturally these factors appeal to queer travelers, along with so many other reasons to visit European countries. But there remains room for tourism growth in both established gay-friendly destinations and in many European nations still striving for greater equality.
To better understand some of the challenges—and ultimately to help with expanding LGBTQ travel across Europe—the IGLTA Foundation conducted a study this spring in partnership with the European Travel Commission (ETC). The "Study on the LGBTQ Travel Segment in Europe" polled and interviewed gay consumers in the ETC's key long-haul markets: Brazil, China, Japan, Russia, and the United States. Questions spanned basic background information along with specific reasons why consumers choose particular destinations, how LGBTQ rights and culture influence their travel planning, and whether queer-oriented marketing campaigns affect their decision making.

The Points Guy
If the month of June is synonymous with Pride celebrations around the world, that has less to do with sunshine and beach-friendly weather than history. After all, it was the Stonewall riots in late June 1969 in New York City's Greenwich Village that kicked off the modern gay rights movement in the US — and by extension (though it would take some time) around the world.

All European Union countries must recognize same-sex marriage, at least in relation to immigration cases where one partner is a citizen of the bloc, its highest court ruled on 5 June.
The verdict was an important victory for L.G.B.T. rights groups, which have long argued that same-sex spouses of European Union citizens should be afforded the same basic right to live and work across the bloc's 28 countries as heterosexual spouses, regardless of individual countries’ stances on same-sex marriage.

Hong Kong's top court has begun to hear an appeal for a landmark case which could have a significant impact on LGBT rights in the territory.
A lesbian, who is known only as QT for legal reasons, is married under U.K. law to SS, with whom she first got a civil partnership in 2011. The pair found themselves facing discrimination when SS relocated to Hong Kong for work – which would usually allow SS to bring a husband on a spousal visa.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to bake a cake to celebrate the marriage of a same sex couple because of a religious objection.
The ruling was 7-2. The court held that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission showed hostility toward the baker based on his religious beliefs. The ruling is a win for baker Jack Phillips, who cited his beliefs as a Christian, but leaves unsettled broader constitutional questions on religious liberty.

Currently gay sex is illegal in the African country, and those found guilty can face up to seven years in jail.
The High Court of Botswana is currently hearing evidence in a case that seeks to overturn the ban on consensual gay sex. The case was brought against Botswana’s Attorney General, Abraham Keetshabe, by a man only identified as LM.
LM argues that parts of the penal code that criminalise "unnatural offenses" and "carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature" violate his constitutional rights. The rights that he argues the current laws violate are his right to "equal protection of the law and freedom from discrimination, the right to liberty and the right not to be subjected to inhuman or degrading treatment."

Outside a crumbling neoclassic building on a seedy Athens street, a tour guide marks the spot where one of Greece's greatest writers Costas Tachtsis used to cruise in drag. A few blocks away, the English poet Lord Byron became infatuated with the 12-year-old daughter of his Greek landlady before succumbing to the charms of a French boy.
"In the 19th century, Greece was an exotic land full of eroticism," tour guide Nicolaos Nicolaides, a historian by training, tells his group. "To European travelers, visiting ancient sites was more of an excuse. Erotic adventures was what they were really hoping for," he adds with a laugh.

Earlier this month, while Weibo, China's most prominent social media platform, was flooded with posts including the hashtag "5.17IDAHO," which represents "May 17 International Day Against Homophobia," two young women were beaten by five security guards because they entered the 798 Art Zone in Beijing wearing LGBT rainbow badges. The two women had planned to attend an LGBT free-hug event hosted in the 798 Art Zone. However, they were stopped by the security guards and asked to take off the rainbow badges.
