How to improve LGBT tourism marketing efforts, according to a city that knows
Skift
Although the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau began a marketing campaign aimed at LGBT travelers in 1996, it took them five more years before they used the word "gay" in any materials. The CVB called it their "rainbow" campaign, in the hope that it wouldn’t deter those opposed to all things gay from visiting, while still attracting the eyeballs of LGBT travelers looking for a sunny getaway — and smart enough to read between the lines.

Mozambique LGBT activists move on to next battle after anti-gay law scrapped
The Guardian
Gay rights activists have welcomed the decriminalization of homosexuality in Mozambique but said they still face a long struggle for full equality. A penal code that came into force on 29 June erased Portuguese colonial laws dating back to 1886 that could condemn anyone "who habitually engages in vices against nature" to three years' hard labour.

With marriage equality won, it's time to turn to LGBT rights abroad
MSNBC
Back in New York City in the 1980s, AIDS, death and discrimination defined my life as a young gay lawyer whose partner was dying of AIDS. Same-sex couples were denied an entire slew of basic rights such as the right to hospital visitation, medical decision-making, adoption and immigration, to name just a few.

Italian minister goes on hunger strike to support legalization of gay civil unions
The Guardian
A junior minister in the Italian government has gone on hunger strike in a protest aimed at speeding up moves to introduce civil unions for gay couples. Ivan Scalfarotto, 49, said in his blog he was aiming to force discussion of the issue into the mainstream and rally the support of "all those people of good faith who have been thinking up until now that it was enough just to wait."

Ukraine LGBT activists worry about future
Voice of America
As members of the LGBT community in the United States celebrate the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriages nationwide, gay-rights activists in Ukraine say they fear their country is headed in the opposite direction. They point to last month's LGBT Equality March in Kyiv — the first since the Euromaidan protests that led to the ouster of a pro-Russia government and brought in a government that pledges to lead the country based on Western values of liberal democracy, tolerance and human rights.

Japan LGBT group files human rights complaint in bid for same-sex marriages
The Japan Times
Hundreds of members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community filed an unprecedented request with the Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA) in a bid to legalize same-sex marriages, saying Japan's failure to recognize the practice constitutes a violation of human rights. Coming on the heels of what lawyers behind the move called a gradual softening of traditional prejudice toward gays in Japan, the bid by 455 individuals is the first attempt to legalize same-sex marriages by appealing over human rights.

Nigerian gay, bi men report more fear in healthcare after law
Reuters
Gay and bisexual men in Nigeria are reporting increased reluctance to access healthcare after the country passed a law last year levying additional sanctions against same-sex couples. While consensual sexual relationships between men were already illegal in Nigeria, the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, signed into law in January 2014, prohibited participation in organizations supporting gay people or attempts at any kind of civil same-sex relationship.

When Kyrstin Schuette, a Minnesotan, and her girlfriend started dating during freshman year in high school, none of the other students — with the exception of a few close friends — knew about their relationship. But that all changed on a school trip when another student found out and spread the word. Immediately, the harassment began.
