Thailand just introduced its first law designed to protect LGBT people.
"Unfair discrimination among the sexes," as defined by actions that "segregate, obstruct, or limit" the rights of LGBT people, is now punishable by up to six months in jail and fines of up to $20,000. The 2015 Gender Equality Act originally set aside exemptions regarding education and religion, but those provisions were promptly removed from an earlier draft.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who last month refused to allow a vote for marriage equality in the Parliament, was ousted from his position and replaced by Malcolm Turnbull through a leadership ballot.
Liberal Party members voted 54 to 44 to replace Abbott with former party leader and Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who had called for the leadership ballot just hours earlier amid flagging opinion polls for the 2-year-old conservative coalition government, reports ABC News.

The Parliament passed a motion condemning the "intimidation and repression" of LGBTI people, and those defending their rights. Homosexuality has been legal in Azerbaijan since 2000, but LGBT people and activists in the country still face routine and systematic oppression.

The Federal Constitution accords equal protection to all citizens under the law but Malaysia's lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) will never be able to lead the life they want, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz has said.
The former de facto law minister claimed that this was because the "lifestyles" the LGBT community ostensibly leads goes against the teachings of Islam, adding that Islamic principles supersedes the the rights protected even by the country's highest law.

Russian drag artist Yulianna Prosvirnina was revelling in the success of the buzzing gay and lesbian party she had organized in Moscow when a hooded mob burst into the venue.
"They stopped the party and shouted 'Who wants to be first?'," the 26-year-old lesbian performer said.
"Then tables started flying, glasses were breaking everywhere and girls were kicked in the stomach. Many people hid and most were so scared, too scared to stand together and defend one another," she said.
