Many of you had the pleasure of working with David Martin Moreno, our IGLTA ambassador for Spain based in Madrid. He was a tireless advocate for LGBTQ visibility in his home country and beyond, receiving an IGLTA Networking Honor for his contributions to Fitur GAY at our 2016 Annual Global Convention in Cape Town. His recent death was a great blow to our LGBTQ tourism family and allies, and we will miss David's energy and enthusiasm every day as we continue to work to make the world more welcoming for all travelers. Click here for a Facebook album with some of our favorite memories of David at tourism industry events over the years.

In Tokyo, the extremely ancient meets the extremely modern, and those juxtapositions play out in everyday life. Photographer Cassidy DuHon and I visited Tokyo earlier this year. During our week there, we met with LGBT rights activists, male geishas, and Japanese drag queens. We sought out the newest luxury hotels and spas, the most popular gay bars- and the freshest slices of sashimi."

U.S. tourism is officially in a slump. After months of reassurances that the travel industry was as strong as ever, new data shows that travel to the U.S. is in fact down. When President Donald Trump announced his travel ban earlier this year, many officials in the travel industry expressed concern that it would harm tourism. With Trump recently issuing a revised travel ban, the question now is whether tourism will recover or continue in its downward spiral.
