New graphene-based inks for high-speed manufacturing of printed electronics
Phys.org
A low-cost, high-speed method for printing graphene inks using a conventional roll-to-roll printing process, like that used to print newspapers and crisp packets, could open up a wide range of practical applications, including inexpensive printed electronics, intelligent packaging and disposable sensors. Developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge in collaboration with Cambridge-based technology company Novalia, the method allows graphene and other electrically conducting materials to be added to conventional water-based inks and printed using typical commercial equipment, the first time that graphene has been used for printing on a large-scale commercial printing press at high speed.

South Korea government, Samsung to back development of manufacturing robots
The Korea Herald
South Korea's government said recently that it will join forces with Samsung Electronics Co. to develop precision manufacturing robots that could open new horizons for the local manufacturing sector. The plan calls for 16.75 billion won ($14.8 million) worth of taxpayers' money to be invested in the next three years to develop key components that can allow more robotic parts to be made in the country and lower overall prices of industrial machines, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said.

Chip makers swept by wave of consolidation
The Wall Street Journal
Slowing growth and rising costs are driving a historic wave of consolidation among semiconductor makers looking to streamline their organizations and product lines. So far this year, chip companies have announced $100.6 billion in mergers and acquisitions, according to Dealogic, exceeding the $37.7 billion total for all of 2014. There have been fewer deals — 276 announced so far this year, compared with 369 in 2014, Dealogic says. But the deals are larger, including Avago Technologies Ltd.'s sector-record $37 billion purchase of Broadcom Corp., announced in May.

Why interest in wearable tech is growing
Baseline
Not that long ago, if you had suggested to your colleagues that your company should invest in wearable technology, you probably would have gotten a collective blank stare as a response — or maybe a grunted "Huh?" Let's face it: The very concept of wearing a computer on your wrist, your head or embedded in your clothing seemed, well, like something out of a science fiction movie. Today, of course, we realize that wearable tech has arrived, and it could be here to stay. As a result, Americans (including non-tech employees) are growing increasingly familiar with the concept, according to a recent Harris Poll.

Japanese electronics maker creates Origami-style drone
CNet
Drones have something of a bad reputation in Japan, especially after a man landed a UAV carrying radioactive sand atop the prime minister's home in April. However, Japanese electronics manufacturer RHOM Semiconductor has found a way to make drone technology more appealing in the country. At this year's Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies trade show in Tokyo, LAPIS Semiconductor, a subsidiary of ROHM, unveiled the Orizuru — a paper crane able to take flight, thanks to a little Japanese ingenuity.

Chips that make the connected car more real
ElectronicsWeekly
The internet of things (IoT) differs from the traditional Internet by replacing the main source of data input (humans) with computers, machines and sensors. Such a development ensures the physical world is intimately interfaced to the Internet without the need for human intervention. We expect the application of the IoT to extend in all aspects of car design, creating the so-called connected car. For example, the mechanics of the vehicle, external infrastructure supporting traffic flow, and the comfort and entertainment of the occupants would all be somehow connected.
