First virtual SAM is successful

Kansas members had their first experience with a Nationwide Virtual Self-Assessment Module (SAM) session on Sunday, May 5. KAFP was allotted 20 seats, and we sold out! This cutting-edge program brought the issues of Mental Health directly into homes and offices with guidance from a peer expert and the knowledge-sharing that occurs when completing a SAM with fellow family physicians.

The KAFP-Foundation's Silent Auction during the KAFP Annual Meeting is a standing tradition. By popular demand, we are extending the Silent Auction from one to TWO days – June 13-14! This will give attendees more time browse and bid. This is a fun event, with lots of different items from food to fitness to entertainment. This year we have received a vacation donation of a one week stay in exclusive Silverthorne Colorado Log Cabin Estate! Annual meeting to recognize AAFP fellows

KAFP will recognize this year's AAFP fellows at the annual meeting during the member meting lunch. Please contact the KAFP if you are a 2012-13 AAFP Fellow and want to receive your certificate during the convocation at our annual meeting.

The Member Meeting Lunch is Friday, June 14, 2013 from 12:15 – 2:00 p.m. All members are invited to attend. Lunch activities include the election of new officers, AAFP Update by AAFP Board of Directors member, Dr. Wanda Filer, MBA, the Fellowship Convocation; preceptor recognition, and award recognitions for our 2013 Kansas Exemplary Teaching award winners and the KAFP-Foundation Hostetter Awardees. The lunch will be at the Wichita Marriot, 9100 Corporate Hills Dr., Wichita.

Next year heralds major changes in nation's healthcare

Within the next 12 months, consumers could get a quick check-up at the pharmacy, text glucose levels to a doctor through a smartphone app or earn bonuses for treadmill time from their employer — all as the nation grapples with growing healthcare costs. Spurred in part by the 2010 healthcare law, also known as the Affordable Care Act, as well as by the chronic disease costs associated with obesity, insurers, providers and businesses have re-imagined everything from where a person with a sprained finger should go for care to what employers can do to increase the overall health — and productivity — of their employees.

Bipartisan center offers plan to reduce healthcare spending
Kansas Health Institute
Medicare beneficiaries would have access to better coordinated medical care and the current Medicare physician payment formula would be scrapped as part of a healthcare cost containment plan the Bipartisan Policy Center. The plan offers more than 50 recommendations that would cut the federal deficit by about $560 billion over the next decade. About $300 billion of those savings would come from Medicare. The document makes a variety of recommendations to change how healthcare is delivered and financed in both the public and private sectors.
