LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Legislative update
Dodie Wellshear, KAFP Government Relations Consultant
All that truly needs to be completed in the 2015 Veto Session is the budget for the next two years and a revenue package that provides for that budget. House and Senate budget committees have largely agreed to a budget package, but preparing a needed revenue package for that is proving elusive.

At the beginning of the 2015 Legislative Session, the governor proposed a tax package worth an estimated $211 - 212 million for each of the next two fiscal years. Included in that package was a proposed cigarette tax increase, from $0.79 to $2.29 per pack, and increasing the excise tax on tobacco products to 25 percent. Combined those are estimated to net $80.8 million in FY 2016 and $76.2 million in FY 2017.
