From the Executive Director: Celebrate & Focus on Family Medicine
KAFP
Dear friends,

As we inch closer to the Annual Meeting I hope you're planning to Focus on Family Medicine with us June 11 – 13 at the Wichita Marriott Hotel! This is truly my favorite time of year. It's energizing, inspiring, engaging, community-building, creative and fascinating to share time together. Come to the meeting to learn a lot, play a little, and expand our worlds. I believe Kansas family physicians are the best family physicians anywhere, although I may be a bit biased ... Our theme this year led me to this anonymous poem...

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Kansas Legislature still hasn't bridged $400 million gap
Dodie Wellshear, KAFP Government Relations Consultant
One week into overtime, the Kansas Legislature has yet to assemble a revenue package to bridge the $400 million gap between their budget package and estimated state revenues.

The Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee, with clearly gritted teeth and arm-twisting, was able to get a bill out of committee without a recommendation for passage by the full body. Senate Substitute for HB 2109 contains a tax mix that is sure to face an uphill battle in debate.

Included in the bill is a proposal to increase the cigarette tax by 50 cents and the tax on other tobacco products from 10% to 15% of wholesale. Senate debate on the bill is set for Wednesday, May 27.

Immunization revised handouts
IAC
IAC has corrected its resource for healthcare professionals, Guide to Contraindications and Precautions to Commonly Used Vaccines, to include the current ACIP language about live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) and children age 2–4 years who have asthma or wheezing, which had been omitted in the previous version dated 3/15. This section of the handout now reads: "In addition, ACIP recommends that LAIV not be used in the following populations...children ages 2 through 4 years who have asthma or had wheezing within the past 12 months, per healthcare provider statement..."
