Dr. Debra Doubek named 2013 Kansas Family Physician of the Year — follows in her father's footsteps

Twenty-one years ago, KAFP congratulated Dr. Herb Doubek (Belleville) as the 1992 Kansas Family Physician of the Year. Today, it is his daughter, Dr. Debra Doubek, (Manhattan) who we have proudly selected as our 2013 Kansas Family Physician of the Year. This is the first time in KAFP history this has happened — parent and offspring are both Kansas FPOY recipients!

JABFM Article: Communities of Solution for Population Health

The Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine (JABFM) features an article on "Communities of Solution (COS)" for population health and outlines a number of primary care-led case studies and commentaries from around the country. The article identifies core principles of COS-based population health initiatives and lays out a vision for integrated healthcare that incorporates community-oriented primary care services. The COS concept has been revisited and updated by the Folsom Group in a 2012 report.

AAFP CareerLink Virtual Career Fair for Residents The AAFP CareerLink Virtual Career Fair will be held Aug. 15 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Residents can connect directly with employers looking to hire family physicians from the comfort of their home or office.

Through this virtual career fair members will:
  • Gain direct access to physician employers looking to hire.
  • Make new connections and broaden their network.
  • Explore career opportunities available to family physicians.

Virtual happy hours for minority medical students

The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Group on Minority Health and Multicultural Education is sponsoring a series of online monthly meetings or virtual "happy hours" for minority medical students. Each 90-minute session starts with a mini-presentation by family medicine faculty and is followed by discussion and sharing of support and resources. There is no cost to participate. Information on registration, schedule and tentative topics is available.

Webinar: The Patient Journey - Implementing Excellence in Asthma Care

Dr. Len Fromer, FAAFP and Dr. Christopher Webber, will present a webinar, "The Patient Journey: Implementing Excellence in Asthma Care" on Monday, June 17 at 1 p.m.

The webinar is designed to provide primary care physicians with simple solutions that can be incorporated into their practices immediately to improve asthma patient care. Participants will learn practical ways to improve patient care by creating motivated, engaged and informed patients. The webinar will also explore concepts that can improve patient activation, the quality of the patient-physician relationship and creating a practice culture that supports improvement in asthma management.

The webinar is free of charge, but pre-registration is recommended.

US Medicare outlook improves as healthcare costs ease

Health of seniors in Missouri, Kansas ranks higher than general population
Kansas City Business Journal
The health of seniors in Missouri and Kansas fares better than the health of the general population, according to reports from the United Health Foundation. Kansas residents age 65 plus rank 18th in the nation, according to a 2013 report on the health of seniors nationwide. Missouri seniors lag behind, ranking 33rd.

Growing KU healthcare campus attracts more than $50 million in private investment

Private developers are discovering a bistate bonanza in midtown thanks to the expansions of recent years by KU Hospital and the University of Kansas Medical Center. The medical campus has been on a construction and expansion tear, with KU Hospital alone investing more than $186 million on new facilities and renovation projects since 2011.
