KDHE urges public to take precautions to prevent West Nile virus
Kansas News First
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Division of Public Health reports there has been a substantial increase in the number of mosquitoes within the past week. These mosquitoes can potentially spread West Nile virus. In 2012, there were 57 cases of West Nile virus in the state, the most cases since the virus first made its way into Kansas in 2002. There are currently no reported cases of West Nile virus in 2013. In addition to tracking cases of human illnesses caused by West Nile virus, KDHE assesses the potential for West Nile virus by conducting limited mosquito surveillance, including laboratory testing.

Kansas views on working poor, state budget, sales-tax increase, higher-ed cuts, science standards
The Wichita Eagle
The 2013 legislative session was a disaster for the working poor. Kansas workers who earn less than $23,500 for a family of four will not have access to expanded Medicaid health insurance. They will have to go to a federal online exchange to get insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Over the next five years, they will share in a $1.2 billion sales-tax increase, which hits them harder than anyone. Along with the middle class, they will lose $975 million in income-tax deductions over that same period. All this is a result of Gov. Sam Brownback's quixotic idea that reducing individual income taxes on business owners will boom the economy.
