Deadline for LTCH/IRF 1st quarter quality data extended to Friday, Aug. 23
KAFP
CMS is extending the deadline for Long-Term Care Hospitals (LTCHs) and Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities (IRFs) submitting first quarter 2013 (January – March) quality data to 11:59:59 p.m. on Aug. 23. The original deadline was 11:59:59 on Aug. 15. AAFP statement: 2014 Proposed Medicare Physician Payment Schedule
AAFP
In its proposed 2014 Medicare physician fee schedule, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services makes headway toward achieving meaningful Medicare physician payment reform by adjusting undervalued codes for primary care services. However, the benefits resulting from the adjustments do nothing to sustain the primary care workforce and improve access to care unless the flawed SGR is repealed.

According to the CDC, many seniors are still not being vaccinated for the potentially fatal conditions of influenza and pneumonia. Effectively addressing this problem is just one of the key reasons we are working with Atlantic Health Partners, the nation's leading vaccine buying group. Atlantic offers our members the most favorable pricing and terms for Merck and Sanofi vaccines, along with outstanding customer service. Undervalued primary care threatens access to healthcare in the United States
AAFP
In August 2013, the AAFP issued a news release calling for an overhaul of the valuation system for primary care services. Without reform, the primary care physician shortage will continue to threaten patients' ability to obtain high-quality, coordinated primary care that prevents the need for more expensive and invasive procedures in the long run.

Talking scales and telemedicine: ACO tools to keep patients out of the hospital
Kaiser Health News
When Bill Hill prepares to weigh himself each morning, a mechanical voice speaks to him from a small box on his nightstand that is connected to the scale on the floor. "Ready for Health Check?" the voice asks. "Do you want to check your weight? Please step on the scale." As Hill, 75, steps on the scale, his weight appears 24 miles away on a computer monitor at Essentia Health in the northwestern Minnesota town of Duluth. There, registered nurse Denise Buxbaum monitors his health as part of a program that aims to keep about 300 heart failure patients out of the hospital.

Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage leaves many couples awaiting federal rules on insurance
Kaiser Health News
Same-sex couples applauded in June when the Supreme Court ruled that the federal ban on recognizing same-sex marriages was unconstitutional, but they are still anxiously awaiting federal guidance about how the ruling affects health insurance benefits. The court's 5-4 decision in the challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act didn't address the law's provision that permits states not to recognize same-sex marriages that were legally performed elsewhere. That leaves many couples in limbo if they are living in one of the 37 states that don't permit same-sex marriages.
