SAM Group Learning Session is Dec. 5 in Wichita — new format
KAFP
Due to high demand, KAFP is offering another SAM Group Learning Session this year. Mark your calendars for Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013.

Registration and information is at http://kafponline.org/Education/SAMGroupLearning/.

The SAM Group Learning Session will assist you in completing the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) module on Hospital Medicine, as part of your maintenance of certification (MC-FP) process. The format for this SAM is different from past group learning sessions conducted by KAFP, to allow for more participants and an easier flow. Questions will be answered as a group. Following the session, the facilitator will provide the names of all participants to ABFM stating you have completed this SAMs module. There is no clinical simulation following the session. You will be required to log in individually on your own and complete the clinical simulation. Due to eliminating the clinical simulation portion of the SAM, the fee has been reduced for KAFP members from that which was charged in past SAM Group Learning Sessions.

Wichita hospital execs describe problems with KanCare
Kansas Health Institute
The state's transition to a Medicaid program run by private managed-care companies has significantly increased administrative costs for two of the state's largest medical centers and so far has failed to curb inappropriate use of emergency room services, according to top hospital managers. Hugh Tappan, chief executive of Wesley Medical Center, the state's third largest hospital in terms of Medicaid volume, said the center’s administrative costs this year have been higher due to the increased rate of disputed claims filed with the state's KanCare managed care companies, which means fewer or stalled payments for the medical center's services.

The 10 most in-demand career specialties in healthcare
Forbes
The family doctor is the most highly recruited health care provider for the 7th year in a row, according to physician staffing firm Merritt Hawkins, a subsidiary of AMN Healthcare (AHS). Family physicians, including those family doctors who deliver babies, are part of a rising wave of top recruits to hospitals, clinics and other medical care centers because they are part of the primary care profession, which treats patients generally in outpatient settings where medical care costs are less expensive. This trend is driven by pressures from employers and insurers trying to keep a lid on costs as well as the Affordable Care Act, which emphasizes lower cost medical care.
