Are $300,000 drugs disruptive to the healthcare system?

Merck recently announced a major cost cutting initiative that will lead to $2.5 billion in savings by 2015. A good portion of these cuts will come from R&D, as Merck plans to scale back its broad research efforts and focus in areas like oncology, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes and hepatitis C. These cuts represent a major philosophical change by Merck's CEO, Ken Frazier, who back in 2011 defended Merck's high commitment to R&D saying that “The most sustainable strategy is innovation." Merck is facing challenging times with looming patent expirations, and can no longer justify an $8 billion annual R&D spend.

FDA issues final mobile medical app guidance

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently issued its final guidance on mobile health apps, ending a two-year wait for developers. The FDA, which issued a draft guidance in July 2011, said it intends to exercise its enforcement discretion and not regulate apps except for those that present a risk to patients if they do not work as intended. While some industry groups were happy the FDA made good on its promise to release the document before the end of fiscal year 2013, others say the FDA should have waited a little longer.
