2015 Family Doctor of the Day Program kicks off Jan. 12

The legislative session will be off and running Jan. 12. We have some openings, and it is important that we fill all days the legislature is in session. The legislators are grateful for this program, and it definitely puts family medicine in a favorable light!

Kansas Bridging Plan application deadline is Dec. 31
The University of Kansas Medical Center
1st and 2nd year residents can apply for the Kansas Bridging Plan. The Kansas Bridging Plan (KBP) is a loan forgiveness program available to primary care resident physicians. Matching funds from the State of Kansas and a healthcare organization provide a combined financial incentive of at least $26,000 ($10,000 available during residency) in exchange for a 36-month commitment to practice in a rural Kansas community upon completion of residency training.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
National Influenza Vaccination Week, Dec. 7-13, serves as a reminder that all of us have a responsibility to prevent the spread of influenza, or the "flu." Kansas has identified two different types of influenza viruses currently circulating, and, based on data from the Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet), CDC will host a live twitter chat, Tuesday, Dec. 9 at noon. CDC's Dr. Mike Jhung will answer your flu Q's! Be sure and use the hashtag to participate: #NIVW2014

Pneumococcal vaccine Q&A

Q: Please describe the new ACIP recommendations for the use of PCV13 vaccine along with PPSV23 vaccine in people age 65 years and older. Can we give both vaccines at the same visit?

A: According to the ACIP recommendations published in September 2014, both pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13, Prevnar 13, Pfizer) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23, Pneumovax, Merck) should be administered routinely in a series to all adults age 65 years and older. The two vaccines should not be given at the same visit.

Safe Kids Kansas
Deck the halls safely this holiday season:
For most of us, the holiday season represents a time for family festivities and good cheer. What few of us consider is that the holiday season is a time when there is an increased risk of home fires and other injuries. The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and Safe Kids Kansas reminds parents and caregivers to take a few precautions when decorating for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and other winter festivities. When it comes to kids' toys, one size does not fit all:
As your child makes their holiday wish list this season, be sure to check it twice for safety. Catalogs, television commercials, store displays and online advertising inundate us with images of the latest toys and gadgets, but not every toy is right for every child. Make sure you and other gift-givers are safety savvy before you hit the stores this holiday season. Read more.
