Updates to meaningful use timeline - No delay to stage 2
Kansas Foundation for Medical Care, Inc.
On Dec. 6, 2013, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services proposed a new timeline for the implementation of meaningful use for the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs. Under the revised timeline, stage 2 will be extended through 2016 and stage 3 will begin in 2017 for those providers that have completed at least two years in stage 2.

Additionally, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology proposed an approach for certification that allows ample time for developers to create and distribute certified EHR technology before stage 3 begins.

Update on VFC inventory and borrowing policies
Dennis Cooley, MD, FAAP
As you know, recently the CDC sent out a letter in September requiring more accountability of the VFC Program. They emphasized that the inventories for Title 21(Medicaid) and Title 19 (CHIP) must be kept separate and the programs would not be allowed to "borrow" from each other. This came about because of problems that occurred with the unaccountability of large sums of money in the two programs. While these requirements are not new, they have not been enforced in the past.

Fact sheet: Health insurance coverage in Kansas
Kansas Health Institute
Recent survey findings from the U.S. Census Bureau revealed a significant increase in health insurance coverage for young adults (age 19-25) in Kansas. Starting in 2010, the Affordable Care Act allowed young adults to stay on their parent's insurance until age 26. Young adults in Kansas are now less likely to be uninsured — 22.9 percent in 2012 compared to 26.8 percent in 2009. This nearly 4 percent decrease in uninsured 19-25 year olds is accompanied by a simultaneous 4.2 percent increase in private coverage. The Kansas Health Institute has produced a Fact Sheet summarizing the Kansas-specific results from the 2012 American Community Survey.
