Ladies Nashville hosts financial workshop and launches newsletter
Ladies Nashville
April showers bring May flowers, and Ladies Nashville "let it rain" with knowledge by having their own Heather Hale lead a Financial Independence workshop at Argosy University on April 18. Women were empowered to get in the spirit of saving, investment and leaving a legacy for their futures, and focused on the mantra "saying no now means saying yes to greater financial power."

On April 1, Ladies Nashville released its first in-house newsletter entitled, "Business on Purpose: The W.O.W. Report." W.O.W., meaning women owned workplaces, is a monthly feature that highlights businesses in the greater Metro Nashville area owned by women. The April W.O.W. is Catina Carney, co-owner of Bartering Book Corporation. Check her out at www.barteringbook.com for more details!

Ladies Nashville is also pleased to report that in just three months, the chapter has gained 50 new members. Welcome aboard! Stay tuned for details on the upcoming eight-session coaching series "The Art of Likability," facilitated by member Rashida Leverett. The series is based on the theory that likability is critical to professional success.

The uncomfortable truth about how we view working women
The Washington Post
Search "CEO" on Google images and the first woman to appear after dozens of men is likely plastic. Barbie trumps even Yahoo's Marissa Mayer on the Internet's symbolic ranking of female success. And the image is actually a joke, an illustration for a 10-year-old Onion story called "CEO Barbie Criticized For Promoting Unrealistic Career Images." This algorithmic folly tells an uncomfortable story about how we picture — quite literally — women in the workplace.

Mentoring and leading go hand in hand
By Betty Boyd
Leadership is an opportunity to give back, and mentoring is the best way to build future leaders. Mentoring allows leaders to pass on their knowledge, which benefits both those being mentored and the organization. Mentoring is an opportunity that should not be taken lightly. It is a way forward in achieving the dreams and goals for both individuals and the organization. Here are four tips to help make mentoring matter.

Here's why you should worry if a woman just got promoted to a top position
Business Insider
It's no secret that women are seriously underrepresented in top leadership. In the U.S., they occupy just 20 percent of senior management roles. So when you spot your first female colleague setting up shop in a corner office, you might be inclined to rejoice and relax, taking her promotion as a sign that the tides are finally turning. But if there was ever a time to fret about the lack of gender diversity in your organization, it's when the first woman is promoted into senior leadership.

6 secrets of happy entrepreneurs
Entrepreneur
Many people choose to become entrepreneurs because they seek more fulfilling work. They might be unhappy with the traditional daily grind of office work and desperate for more control over their daily tasks, or driven to create something with meaning. Whatever the case, entrepreneurs generally go into business with the expectation that entrepreneurship is going to make them happier. While new entrepreneurs generally do find it fulfilling, there's also an unfortunate opportunity for disillusionment.

How to make networking fun
Fast Company
We all know networking is important, but it can be hard to force ourselves to do it. We have too many meetings and obligations; we have to stay late for work; we don't get enough time with our friends and family. Who has time for another meet-and-greet to swap business cards, or a committee meeting with droning conference calls? But too often, we forget that our professional lives can, and should, be joyful. Being bored at a networking event isn't a sign that something is serious and important — it's a sign that something is seriously wrong.

Not taking risks is the riskiest career move of all
Harvard Business Review
It's hard to jettison a career decades in the making in the pursuit of something new. There's an enormous gap between dreaming about doing something different, particularly if one has spent years building skills and rising through the ranks, and actually doing anything about it. Most people dream, but fail to act. What stops us?

Women are owning more and more small businesses
The Atlantic
Owning your own business is often touted as the ultimate coup in the working world. You set your own hours, pursue projects you're interested in and maybe work in your pajamas. Obvious challenges aside, it sounds like a pretty nice gig. Such jobs are largely enjoyed by men, who make up an estimated 71 percent of business owners in the U.S. But that might slowly be changing.
