Forbes
Farnoosh Torabi's new book, When She Makes More: 10 Rules for Breadwinning Women, hits close to home for Susan Adams. Do men really want women on the leadership track?
Forbes
According to recent global survey results from organizations like McKinsey and Deloitte, helping women overcome the leadership barriers they face is not even a top three priority for most business executives. "This is because guys don't want the competition" one of my female MBA students said last week during a class on Leadership and Diversity taught at INCAE Business School. Although the male students laughed dismissively, Warren Buffet might have agreed with her. When asked the secret to his success during an interview, he replied that one reason was because "I only had to compete with half the population."

But even when women are well-positioned to take a company's reins, they sometimes don't, according to a study published this month in the American Sociological Review Those who start new businesses with men have limited opportunities to move into leadership roles, and when they co-found a business with their husbands, they have even fewer chances to be in charge, according to a statement from the association.

Why the financial services industry is showing more women in its ads
Harvard Business Review
Financial institutions portray women today as competent and self-confident, and often feature attractive, middle-aged advisors talking to couples in which the woman is similarly well dressed and clearly attentive. According to Dr. Emma Firestone, who has studied the audience perception and response to images and words in media and entertainment, from a cognitive perspective, "It makes sense for advertisers to present women as strong, well-educated consumers. This is appealing to women who see an attractive self-image reflected back at them, and to men, who are flattered by the idea that smart, self-possessed, and financially secure women are their own life partners."
