Women entrepreneurship is growing, but still a long road ahead
By Cait Harrison
It must be a sign of the times: More working women than ever are starting their own businesses. Recent data shows there were 9.9 million women-owned businesses in 2012, a 27.5 percent increase from 2007. Another finding: Minority women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs. The data showed Hispanic women-owned businesses grew by 87 percent in the same time period, while the number of companies owned by black women was up by 68 percent.

As your startup grows, here is who to hire when
Knowing who to hire when is just as important as picking the right people for each role. As a small company, when resources are tight, every new team member has to add a lot of value to drive growth. And as you scale, your staffing needs will change; what you need when you're a company of five isn't the same as what you’ll need when you're a company of 50.

This simple strategy from a TED talk master will transform your speaking
Tech Insider
Chris Anderson, the head curator of TED, has some sage advice from his upcoming book on public speaking. "Your goal is not to be charismatic or entertaining, or to tell a story about your life or your organization," Anderson said at a recent TED Fellows Retreat in California. "Your real goal is to seed an idea in your audience's mind. Doing that is a gift."

Why I put my wife's career first
The Atlantic
Andrew Moravcsik writes: Three years ago, my wife, Anne-Marie Slaughter, wrote about how difficult it remains for women to "have it all" — a family and a career. She'd recently left a high-powered job in Washington, D.C., to return to our home in Princeton, New Jersey, where I had been acting as lead parent to our children.

5 networking strategies even the shy professional can use
Networking is critical and not just for moving laterally within your existing employer. Landing a job (especially getting your resume noticed), being effective on the job and getting a promotion all involve networking to a significant degree. People hire people. People collaborate with each other. Of course, then, career success relies on your relationships with people.

Why having friends at work is so important
Fast Company
Fact: we spend most of our days at work. The reality for many is that the workweek extends more than the standard 40 hours, and the average U.S. employee only takes about half of their eligible paid time off. Given all that time spent in close proximity to colleagues, it's surprising that Americans are less likely to have friends at work now than in years past.

3 reasons why smart women get workplace backlash
The Huffington Post
If you are a smart, powerful woman leader who is taking on more strategic responsibility or rising to a new level in your organization, you may experience backlash tied to the very attributes that helped you get where you are, and in fact, ones you've been encouraged to hone. It stings because you are driven to excel and you sincerely care about how others perceive you. You may feel blindsided then perplexed.

Why most resumes don't even get a glance
Job seekers have the wrong impression about the way resumes and applications are screened. They think that HR screeners and internal recruiters make minute distinctions and careful analysis as they review resumes. It doesn't work that way very often. The machine makes the distinctions and they aren't fine or careful. It's all about the keywords in your application — the same keywords you saw in the job ad.
