IT vs. manufacturing: Get along to go along
    Automation World
To be effective, implementations of remote diagnostics generally require a fair amount of collaboration between the corporate IT department and manufacturing operations. It's no secret, however, that the necessary understanding is often lacking when the two groups first come together, thereby slowing the adoption of information technologies in production.

Do forecasts really matter in the manufacturing sector?
    By Alan Kelsky
With so many factors in play, forecasting for a wide-ranging field like manufacturing is never easy. Yet many organizations from the government to the private sector make predictions almost every day. What we see in the results are a variety of expectations — and revisions — for how manufacturing will grow in the coming months and years. Here is a look at three recent predictions.

Boeing CEO: Most of our engineering and manufacturing jobs are in the US, but that soon could change
    Business Insider
Boeing Co may have to relocate U.S.-based engineering and manufacturing jobs overseas if Congress eliminates funding for the U.S. Export-Import Bank, Chief Executive Jim McNerney said. Boeing has about 165,000 engineering and manufacturing jobs in the United States, a company spokesman said. Some of an estimated 1.5 million jobs in the company's U.S. supply chain could also be in jeopardy if U.S. credit support ceased, McNerney noted.

    Rethinking the manufacturing robot
    MIT Technology Review
In a workshop at the Boston headquarters of Rethink Robotics, engineers are tending to a troop of eight bright red robots called Baxter. Each robot has a humanoid upper torso and a pair of friendly blue eyes on a small screen that track the robots' two arms as the engineers move them. Off to the side of the room, senior product manager Brian Benoit is assembling a new robot called Sawyer — Baxter's little brother. It has just one arm and is also smaller, faster, and more precise than Baxter.

10 ways mobility is revolutionizing manufacturing
    Forbes
CEOs prioritizing the strategic importance of mobile technologies are driving a revolution in manufacturing today. Designing mobility into new production strategies, processes and procedures is bringing greater accuracy and speed to production centers. Augmenting existing processes with mobility is delivering solid efficiency gains. The net result is greater communication, collaboration and responsiveness to customer-driven deadlines and delivery dates than has been possible before. Manufacturers are staying away from BYOD on the shop floor due to security, scalability and support challenges.

Can manufacturing lead the way to a sustainable future?
    GreenBiz
At least since 1798, when Thomas Malthus identified exponential population growth as a harbinger of humanity's doom, the concept of sustainability often has been associated with apocalyptic rhetoric. In recent years, however, business leaders and investors alike have begun to embrace sustainability for its upside potential. There's a growing awareness that large-scale challenges — such as climate change, resource constraints, urbanization and global demographic shifts — require equally large-scale solutions. That's why the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board aims to harness the power of the capital markets to address these issues head-on.
