When it comes to recruitment, the U.S. manufacturing industry has taken a multi-decade hit. High school and college institutions have reduced the emphasis on skills-based education and public perception has been tarnished by recessions and layoffs—not to mention the inaccurate perception that manufacturing is outdated, dirty, repetitive work. This couldn't be further from the truth.
NAFTA, intended to boost exports and imports between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, managed to stay largely out of the limelight for 22 years. But it has emerged as the poster child for America's manufacturing job losses even though experts say the three-country trade deal is just one part of a much larger, more complex web of international trade.
During the 20th century we made just about everything in San Francisco — from Levi's jeans to cold hard cash — and the sprawling manufacturing industry shaped the city's expansion decade after decade.
One look at defunct factories and warehouses dotting the eastern side of the city will tell you that those days are seemingly done, even though we do still make stuff in San Francisco.

Although it's in its plastics industry end-use product infancy, 3-D printing is a disruptive, technology-driven innovation that will change the face of manufacturing in the coming years, provided additional plastic material development takes place. The growth of 3-D printing plastic materials is entering an important 3-5-year development phase where it is evolving from highly publicized prototypes and molds/tooling to end use industrial and consumer products.
The Wall Street Journal
A gauge of U.S. factory activity rose in October, a sign the manufacturing sector could be stabilizing after two years of challenging conditions.
The Institute for Supply Management said its purchasing manufacturers' index rose to 51.9 in October from 51.5 in September. A reading above 50 indicates that factory activity is growing, while a reading under 50 signals contraction.
