Remember when receipt of a coffee mug emblazoned with "Best Mom Ever" or a T-shirt proclaiming "Best Dad Ever" was enough to validate someone's skills and aptitude as a parent? In the 21st century, it seems that the ante has been raised.
Raising children has never been easy but given the extreme expectations placed on today's parents and the range of modern-day challenges confronting them, the support and guidance of counselors can be invaluable. In the eyes of society, parents barely qualify as competent — much less "perfect" — unless they can check off the many qualifications. Continue reading.

Every intern deserves a meaningful training experience via his or her field placements. Sadly, some of the most valuable clinical lessons are learned when crisis strikes.
I completed my final internship at a public high school in one of the state's most affluent and picturesque towns. My students were respectful, ambitious, talented and generally had the social support they needed to thrive. In many regards, I had an "easy" site.
I was at a baby shower when I received a staff-wide email (an oddity for a Sunday afternoon) from the school's administration. One of my greatest fears emerged — a student had died by suicide earlier that morning. The next day, I would embark on one of the most challenging, heartbreaking, and enlightening experiences of my counseling education. Continue reading.

Helping clients to identify and modify their dysfunctional thinking allows them to develop effective personal coping strategies, change destructive behaviors and improve relationships. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) focuses on solutions — encouraging clients to retrain their brain and learn skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. Written by CBT experts, each chapter contains a transcript of an actual counseling session and an array of practical, evidence-based techniques useful for a range of populations, age groups and presenting problems. Today I embark on a journey — a journey toward fearlessness. Today I launch my private practice. It will only be part-time but this is the furthest I have come toward realizing this dream. I have toyed with the idea for years but I never got past the point of looking for office space. That seemed too much of a leap of faith. Well, I have finally done it. My office space is leased, my LLC is created and I have business cards on the way. The only thing pending is furniture for said office and finding clients. It has been so incredibly amazing to see my ideas and dreams come to fruition. But it would have never happened had I not tried one motivational strategy to move myself past my fear and procrastination. I left a browser window open. Continue reading.

A shaky video uploaded from inside the shooting in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, shows about a dozen students crouched on the floor of a classroom hiding from an active shooter who ultimately killed 17 people. In the video, at least four of the students have their phones up recording as a SWAT team bursts through the door.
"Put away your phones!" one member of the SWAT team yells as the teens put their arms in the air.

In the aftermath of the school shooting in Parkland, FL, that killed 17 people, officials had a message that's become a common refrain in the wake of these tragedies: Grief counselors would be available.
These counselors are trained for these crisis moments, to be the first responders to shock and sorrow. They arrive as trauma is still unfolding. The nature of their work is to move from tragedy to tragedy: They arrive in the immediate aftermath, to serve as a kind of bridge that brings survivors and victims from the event to, hopefully, longer-term mental health or counseling services. Then they are gone.

A huge new study may help settle the ongoing debate about whether antidepressant medications really work, concluding that all of them are effective in relieving symptoms, though some more than others.
The study, published in The Lancet, was led by researchers at Oxford Health. It reviewed 522 already-published, randomized controlled trials that tested 21 antidepressants on more than 116,000 participants.

New research from Western Sydney University has revealed that simple self-care strategies, such as spending time with animals and getting enough sleep, are helpful for people managing bipolar disorder symptoms. The research, published recently in Clinical Psychologist, involved 80 participants with bipolar disorder reviewing the frequency and perceived helpfulness of 69 self-care strategies. These strategies were diverse, and included things such as abstaining from drugs and alcohol, practising yoga and finding things that make you laugh.
