Counseling Today
It's estimated that one in four children in the United States (or approximately 18.25 million children) live in a family with a parent who is addicted to drugs or alcohol.
Adult children who grew up in the same environment with substance abuse can respond with a range of emotions, from denial or anger to empathy — or develop a substance use disorder themselves. A counselor can help them with a crucial part of recovery: Sorting through their conflicted feelings of love, disappointment, anger and shame.

How often when asked the question, "How are you?" is the response something like, "Oh I've had a bad day," or "I'm doing alright." On the contrary I usually hear something like "Good, fine," or occasionally, "Well, thanks and you?" I wonder if in part people, myself included, are quick to respond "Good!" because we haven't taken the time to self-evaluate, and truly don't know the state of our being.
What does the barometer read when you have reached your limit and your plate is too full? More importantly, how do you know when you are getting to that point?

"It's been two days since our date. Why hasn't he texted?!"
Dating sometimes feels like an emotional roller-coaster and your brain can start sounding the rejection alarm if a potential suitor doesn't contact you as frequently as you'd like. If the above scenario sounds all too familiar, try focusing on being the person you want to be, rather than trying to control another person's actions. With lessened anxiety, you will be better able to think objectively and decide whether a relationship is right.

Parents who hit their kids may believe that a swat "just gets their attention" or imposes old-fashioned discipline, but spanking in fact makes behavior worse than it was before and can cause long-term harm, such as mental health problems, say pediatricians in updated guidelines.

Washington state law does not require schools to have counselors. State Superintendent Chris Reykdal wants to change that.

That's the ratio recommended by the American School Counselor Association.

It is no surprise that first responders encounter high levels of stress in their careers. They endure long hours and shift work, unpredictable situations, critical incidents involving exposure to trauma, public criticism and inherent dangers that occur in their line of work. The stress of the job is not isolated to responders and often impacts their spouse and even their children.

For most of us, the holiday season means lots of social events — Thanksgiving with your folks, Christmas dinner with your in-laws, the office holiday party, and additional religious gatherings.
It's a blessing to celebrate when we enjoy each other's company and treat each other with respect and kindness. On the other hand, it's draining to spend time with people who exude negative energy, always seem to have a problem or crisis and demand your attention. Often, overly dramatic people, such as these, want to suck you into their negativity vortex.

Many members of Generation Z — young people between 15 and 21 — have taken more active roles in political activism this year, and a new survey indicates that the state of the nation is to blame for this generation's stress levels.
As gun violence, sexual assault claims and immigration dominate the 2018 news cycle, the American Psychological Association's annual Stress in America survey says that such issues are the main cause of stress among young adults.

When I was diagnosed with major depression at 22, I was too deep within the fog of the illness to much care that finally, after years of struggling, I had an answer as to why I felt so impenetrably bad, and that with treatment, I could improve. Later, once I began therapy and started taking antidepressants, I began to feel better, which resulted both in relief and a strange sort of guilt.

We have all said yes when we knew better, and mostly the impact is as meaningless as eating an hors d'oeuvre just to be polite. But sometimes the impact is life-changing: Saying yes to a marriage, a job or a home that doesn't feel right. Eventually, those mistakes become glaringly obvious. To others, you can claim innocence. But in hindsight, if you are truly honest with yourself, you always knew better.

A traumatic event is defined as one that is life–threatening, unimaginable and unexpected. It is an event that can assault your body, your spirit and your life as you know it. For a couple, a medical diagnosis of cancer is a traumatic event for both partners — the one diagnosed and the one standing by their side.

"I'm David and I need some help." That statement by Bodyguard's David Budd — heard by the record-breaking 11 million people who tuned in to watch the BBC1 series finale — was a powerful moment on television. We so rarely see action heroes accepting that they have issues to work through. And while we weren't privy to whatever discussions Budd had with his counselor about his PTSD-inducing time in Afghanistan, it was enough just to know that he was having them.

The rate of emergency department visits among children and youth for mental health concerns has risen dramatically across dozens of U.S. hospitals since 2012, with the rate of mental health diagnoses notably high among black patients, according to newly released study findings.
"The rates of pediatric emergency department visits for mental health-related concerns are increasing... across all racial and ethnic groups," says Dr. Monika Goyal, the study's senior author. "However, when compared to non-Hispanic white children, non-Hispanic black children are being disproportionately affected."

Ariana Grande is encouraging fans to follow her lead and seek out therapy to deal with trauma, because it has been her savior "so many times."
The "God Is A Woman" hitmaker was diagnosed with post–traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) last year after a bomb attack outside a concert in Manchester, England derailed her Dangerous Woman Tour, and cost 22 fans their lives. The tragedy left Ariana struggling with crippling anxiety attacks, and in September, the singer's mental health took another big hit following the death of her ex-boyfriend, rapper Mac Miller, who passed away from an accidental drug overdose.

A few weeks ago, I began to have trouble getting out of bed in the morning. My body and brain felt sluggish and low and I started swapping out exercise and socializing in favor of Rice Krispie treats and a seemingly endless Buffy the Vampire Slayer binge (thank you Hulu!). A fun fact about freelancing is that you lose track of the calendar, and I didn't immediately connect the onset of fall with this particular bout of depression. But it appears autumn is here; the end of daylight savings is upon us and it's time for SAD to set in once more.
