The surge in church foreclosures represents a new wave of distressed property seizures triggered by the 2008 financial crash, with many banks no longer willing to grant struggling religious organizations forbearance. The Internal Revenue Service warned senior citizens and other taxpayers to beware of an emerging scheme tempting them to file tax returns claiming fraudulent refunds.
