Nonprofit tax-exemption approvals double thanks to simplified form
The Chronicle of Philanthropy
The Internal Revenue Service approved 94,365 applications from organizations seeking 501(c)(3) designations in fiscal year 2014, more than double the number approved in the previous two years. The one-year jump was due to the introduction of an alternative, three-page electronic version of the 26-page form 1023, the IRS said in its 2014 Data Book, an annual report released Tuesday, March 24. The electronic option, 1023-EZ, first became available in July 2014 and provides a streamlined way for organizations with annual gross receipts of less than $50,000 to apply for tax-exempt status.

"Journey." You're probably pretty familiar with the word. Sure, it's a popular buzzword in marketing today, but it's also the word we use to describe the path one takes to become acquainted with a new church — perhaps yours. And just as the people who take that journey are unique individuals with different needs and preferences, so are each of the steps along the way. Thus, the way you communicate with your congregants can't be through a single channel. It must be multifaceted. Enter the mobile engagement journey.

Faith leaders ask Congress to protect programs that aid the poor
Baptist News
More than 1,300 organizations from every state in the nation have signed a letter urging Congress to approve a budget that adheres to four basic principles intended to reduce poverty and inequality and spur broadly shared economic growth. The coalition called Strengthening America's Values and Economy (SAVE) for all urged members of Congress to make budget choices that: (1) protect low-income and vulnerable people; (2) invest in broadly shared prosperity that raises incomes across the economic spectrum; (3) increase revenues from fair sources; and (4) seek responsible savings by targeting wasteful spending in the Pentagon and elsewhere.

Study finds men focus charitable efforts on children
The Chronicle of Philanthropy
Men cited helping children as their top cause for volunteering and donating to charity, a new study has found. The findings suggest that family dynamics might play a larger role in motivating men to give and volunteer than fundraisers, communications staff, and others working on behalf of charities have realized, says Brittany Hill, the study's lead researcher. Seventy-three percent of the men in the study said they gave money to charity. Forty-four 44 percent of those respondents said they gave less than $25 per month, and 9 percent said they gave more than $100 per month.

The Associated Press via Crux

The survey, which is conducted by the independent research organization NORC at the University of Chicago, puts wide-ranging and long-running questions about a large array of issues to the public.

San Francisco church u-turn on soaking rough sleepers
BBC
A church in San Francisco has promised to remove controversial sprinklers it installed to deter rough sleepers. After an outcry, the city's archdiocese admitted it had been "ill-conceived" for St Mary's Cathedral to treat homeless people in this way. The water system was put in place two years ago for safety reasons, it said, to stop needles and excrement being left in alcoves near the back door. The sprinklers may also have been illegal, a church statement said.

Can one pastor bridge deep divides between evangelicals and mainline Protestants?
The Washington Post
Amy Butler's new office in Riverside Church's steeple — the tallest in the country — towers within Manhattan’s skyline. But more than six months since she was installed as senior minister of a heralded pulpit, Butler faces significant challenges, including the church's decades-long membership decline. As mainline Protestant churches struggle with membership losses across denominations, Butler is looking for ways to infuse some of what has made evangelicalism thrive into a more progressive form of Protestantism, two forms of Christianity usually seen at odds with one another.
