Supreme Court decision: 4 common questions
    Richard Hammar via PE News
In a 5-4 ruling on June 26, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the right of same-sex couples to marry is part of the Fourteenth Amendment's guarantees of due process and equal protection of the laws, and therefore any state law that in any way limits this right is unconstitutional and void. The effect of the Court's decision was to invalidate laws and constitutional provisions in 13 states defining marriage solely as a union between one man and one woman. For many church leaders, the central issue is the impact of the Court's ruling on religious practices.

How to take a vacation without checking email
    By Deborah Ike
It's summertime! The kids are out of school, the weather is nice, and it's time for a vacation. Whatever adventure your family chooses, vacations are a great time to recharge and reconnect. And by that I mean, recharge your batteries (not your electronic devices every few hours because you're on them constantly), and reconnect with loved ones and maybe your pillow. I get it — you're dedicated to your work; especially since your work is inextricably tied to your faith.

What your church website screams about you
    By Mark MacDonald
Everyone uses the Internet. Well, almost everyone. According to Internet Live Stats, 86.75 percent of Americans use the Web. Most of us visit the Internet quickly to discover new things, remind us of information, be entertained and/or buy things. So it makes sense to have a website if you want to communicate effectively. Internet use is increasing, while many forms of print communications are declining. For effective communications, your church needs a great website.

Where are all the millennial leaders?
    Tony Morgan Live
One question that consistently comes up is, “How can our church attract talented, young leaders?” It would be nice if there was a simple ABC formula that would make young leaders flock to your church. The reality is two churches could sing the exact same songs, have the same modern facilities, and preach an identical message series but still experience completely different results. Churches can’t have millennial leaders without first attracting millennials. This is where branding becomes a key factor.

Why aren't we treating our clergy better?
    Huffington Post
Like high tech workers moving from one sub-contract to another, ministers are becoming more of a mobile migratory class that gravitate to one special project after another. Thus, any institutional history or permanence regarding some pastorates becomes completely obliterated. This brings us to the question: When are we going to get honest in the church about supporting our clergy?

Report: Fire at black church in S.C. was not arson, feds say
    USA Today
Although arson is blamed for at least three fires over the past two weeks at several predominantly black churches in Southern states, a blaze that destroyed Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal church in South Carolina was not deliberately set, according to a federal source, the Associated Press reported.

How the ultimate scandal saved one pastor
    CNN
No one predicted that D.E. Paulk would discover that the man he believed to be his uncle, Archbishop Earl Paulk Jr., was really his biological father. The bishop had slept with his brother's wife while sharing the pulpit with both. And no one predicted that after years spent extricating his family from assorted scandals, D.E. would do something in church that was, for many of his parishioners, far more outrageous than anything his notorious uncle did.

Decision quality is not the same as decision outcome
    Faith & Leadership
Failure is a hot topic in church leadership today, with seminaries and denominations and congregations exploring the relationship between failure and creativity, innovation and institutional problem solving. With all of this talk, however, we’re still missing one crucial element in our conversations around failure: decision-making. How do we distinguish between good decisions that happen to result in failure and bad decisions that lead to failure? Or how do we tell the difference between a bad decision that just happens to turn out well and a good decision that succeeds according to plan?

    When a leader spirals downward
    Church Leaders
An aviation term called a death spiral describes what can happen to a plane in nighttime or poor flying conditions when a pilot loses his sense of the plane’s horizontal orientation. The plane can begin to spin uncontrollably. Unless the pilot pulls out, he can spiral out of control and crash. In ministry, leaders can often get caught in a similar downward spiral mentally, physically, emotionally or relationally. When that happens, what can we do to pull out of it? The prophet Jonah illustrates what contributes to a downward spiral and what we must do to pull out of one.
