Churches shifting summer worship to Wednesday night
Religion News Service    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Summer has a way of thinning out pews on Sunday mornings as the sun-loving faithful take to trails, outdoor markets and backyard projects. The predictable pattern poses challenges, especially for smaller congregations. More and more, however, churches are rediscovering Wednesday — a traditional midweek church night — as a prime time to gather the flock for casual worship in summer. More

Churches take their message to taverns
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Across the country, faith is becoming bar talk. The trend combines the traditional religious charge to go where the people are with the reality that a lot of them are in bars. Organizers include those from mainline churches, those building churches, and bar owners and brewers. Some are trying to push the model nationally, taking an ageless yearning for meaning and purpose to places where people often go to try to wash their worries away. More

ChurchLeaders.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Is there a way to take the very best branding ideas from today's Fortune 500 companies and apply them to the church? Of course, take Doritos — a brand we all know and love. US confidence in organized religion at low point
Gallup    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Forty-four percent of Americans have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in "the church or organized religion" today, just below the low points Gallup has found in recent years, including 45 percent in 2002 and 46 percent in 2007. This follows a long-term decline in Americans' confidence in religion since the 1970s. More

Churches tighten financial controls to avoid repeat embezzlement
The Oklahoman    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The governing bodies of churches are often concerned that reporting embezzlement by employees could hurt donations or grant opportunities when made public. The decision to seek prosecution is not easy, but absolutely necessary, said Oklahoma City attorney Michael Joseph, who represents several churches and nonprofit organizations that have fallen victim to employees who have stolen from them. 7 traits of breakout churches
Outreach Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Simply defined, a breakout church is a congregation that has experienced at least five years of decline followed by at least five years of growth. While numerical growth is not the inerrant barometer for church health, researchers must use numerical gauges for much of their objective data. The breakout churches, almost without exception, had seven common characteristics. More

Redeeming even the messiest church conflicts
Managing Your Church    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Over the years we have seen the best and worst responses to conflict from our brothers and sisters in Christ. Every church conflict can be redeemed because every church conflict can be used for genuine spiritual growth, both individually and corporately within the body of Christ. Christ can use you to redeem your church's conflict — regardless of how other people respond, even if you are only one lay member out of hundreds or even thousands. More

Small church gives 100 percent of tithe to needy for a year
The Christian Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Simply passing the collection plate during Sunday services in order to help meet the budget was not good enough for the leaders of a small church in Mississippi. So the pastor and leaders of Traceway Baptist Church in Clinton decided they needed to take all of their congregation's tithes and offerings and give it to those in need for an entire year. More

Generosity beyond the church
ChrisWillard.me    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
North Coast Church, a multisite church in California, has an intentional strategy for cultivating giving that does not rely on the church budget. The church tries to expose its congregation to different overseas missionaries, and then they invite the congregation to support these missionaries directly. In other words, the church tries to avoid being a middleman. More

Making church more accessible
Church Executive    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In 1975, a group of young renegades in the Chicago suburbs decided to "do" church a new way. Starting in a local theater, they brought a fresh approach to living out their faith in Christ. With 100 in attendance and a children's ministry that met in one of the washrooms, no one could have imagined what God would do with these impassioned young adults. Within 31 years, Willow Creek Community Church had opened its fifth regional campus. More

9 ways to defend yourself against complainers
Business Insider    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Your brain doesn't know the difference between fact and fiction, so if you're hearing or reading something negative, it's going to affect you in the same way as if you're experiencing it in real life. Since our brain can't associate between real-and-fake-life, it's best to limit your exposure to negativity by staying away from the people where the negativity comes from. The complainers. More

Why smart leaders need to keep selling their message
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
All good leaders need to be good storytellers. One of the reasons that change initiatives fail is because senior management fails to engage in the communication process. Reiteration of a message does not mean repetition in the sense of duplication. Savvy leaders spice up their key messages with stories that underscore their key points. More
