Encourage your local educators to enter the CEF Earth Day Challenge!
Know a K-8 educator who's interested in exploring the science of water with their students for the chance to win $1,000? Tell them to check out the CEF Earth Day Challenge, a video contest for elementary and middle school classes! To enter, educators should submit a short video about their experience conducting one of CEF's award-winning science activities with their students. In recognition of the American Chemical Society's 2014 Earth Day theme, "Wonders of Water," participating educators are asked to choose from several water-related lessons in the You Be The Chemist® Activity Guides — which are free to download from the Earth Day Challenge webpage.

The school of the educator who submits the winning entry will receive $1,000 for the school's science education programs, as well as a commemorative plaque! Additionally, the winning educator will receive a $200 gift card to the Discovery Channel Store.

To learn more about contest guidelines or how to submit an entry, visit CEF's website or contact

Why companies fail to engage today's workforce: Overwhelmed employees

This is a worldwide issue. Gallup research shows that only 13 percent of employees around the world are actively engaged at work, and more than twice that number are so disengaged they are likely to spread negativity to others.

Why good managers are so rare
Harvard Business Review
Gallup has found that one of the most important decisions companies make is simply whom they name manager. Yet our analysis suggests that they usually get it wrong. In fact, Gallup finds that companies fail to choose the candidate with the right talent for the job 82 percent of the time. Bad managers cost businesses billions of dollars each year, and having too many of them can bring down a company. Businesses that get it right, however, and hire managers based on talent will thrive and gain a significant competitive advantage.

How to talk to employees so they listen
No one likes to be lectured in the workplace. As a leader, you need to communicate with your employees to deliver strategic direction, reinforce corporate culture and rally the troops to achieve company goals and objectives. To be effective, you need to deliver these messages in a way that creates energy and enthusiasm, rather than deflating your team.
