While hard-working students competed at their state-level You Be The Chemist Challenges® this past weekend, many were treated to a letter, speech or visit from one of their legislative representatives. U.S. Representatives from Illinois (Rep. Bill Foster), Michigan (Rep. Kerry Bentivolio) and New Jersey (Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen) attended their respective State Challenge events and made brief remarks. Also in attendance at the New Jersey competition was State Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, who even read questions to students during a Lightning Round!

Staff members from the offices of several U.S. senators and representatives from Indiana, Kentucky and Louisiana also attended their state competitions to applaud the efforts of the students and educators involved. And 17 members of Congress from the states of Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia have pledged to send congratulatory letters to their state champions and/or other participants from their districts.

How to Make Better Hiring Decisions
By Mel Kleiman
The best applicant and the best employee are rarely one in the same, so I recommend following a "hire tough, manage easy" philosophy. Even if you occasionally miss the mark, you will still be hiring to a higher standard. The following "best practices" will help you build an excellent team. First, remember there are two parts to every interview: gathering information and evaluating that information. To the best of your ability, keep them separate. Most interviewers have a tendency to let one good or bad answer skew their take on subsequent responses.

Habits Effective Team Members Should Never Outgrow
The term "habit" generally has a negative connotation, but if you form the right habits and shed the bad ones, your team will be that much stronger. This usually requires letting selfishness fall by the wayside. If you are planning on making some behavioral changes in order to be a more effective member of your team, be sure to retain or develop these habits.
