Near Miss Analysis: Personal Protective Equipment
Recently, NACD members have anonymously submitted near miss examples for the purpose of providing lessons learned for an improved industry. A near miss is an unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness or damage — but had the potential to do so. One example of a near miss is improper wearing of protective clothing. Click here to read how one member company handled an employee wearing pant legs tucked inside of their boots. Be sure to view additional near miss examples and confidentially submit your own on the Responsible Distribution Resources page.

The Cost of Being an Entrepreneur and the Key Attribute that Determines Success: Grit
Norm Brodsky, a coach and member of the New York chapter of the Inc. Dealing with Acidic Attitudes: Help for Your Managers
    HR Morning
Every workplace has negative people who erode morale. They're not always easy to pick out of a crowd, but they can do an amazing amount of damage over time. Most of the time, these folks don't make the big mistakes that call attention to themselves. They're frequently pretty good at their jobs, so they're not called on the carpet too often. But like a virus running in the background of a computer program, their acidic personalities eat away at the goals — and ultimately the bottom line — of the company week after week, year after year. Who are these people?

    Connecting Employee and Customer Engagement
Companies must be able to prove the relationship between employee engagement and customer experience. Phil Anderson, client director at Ashridge Business School, says this shouldn't be too tricky. "There is lots of research which shows that happy employees lead to happy customers who are loyal and spend more money — which leads to better profit."

Employee Retention with Millennials Calls for Different Motivators
    The Staffing Stream
In national surveys by the Bureau of Labor Statistics the average American's job tenure was 10 years in 2008 and by 2012 had dropped to 4.4 years. The baby boomers, those born after WWII until 1964, sought careers that offered prestige, fiscal support and security in longevity. Their children, Generation X, pursued careers with a similar drive but with a greater desire for autonomy and an improved work-life balance to invest in their family. Millenials have absorbed these ideals too but introduced their own complexities of career motivators, expectations and needs.

How Distractions Cause Stress and Impede Your Ability to Function
    By Michael S. Haro, Ph.D.
If you are easily distracted, your level of stress likely rises with these distractions. In this state, your potential for making poor decisions and mistakes increases. Leaders and managers constantly face their share of distractions, so it's important to know how to handle them in the appropriate manner. Distractions are always present, and your reaction controls your behavior. The slogan, "As you think, so you go," fits because your thoughts direct your actions and behavior.
