New Blog Post: Off the Rails — Senate Committee Tells Rail Shippers to Get Back on Track
Earlier this week, NACD issued a grassroots alert encouraging association members who have a U.S. senator serving on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to urge their lawmakers to vote "yes" on S. 2777, the Surface Transportation Board Reauthorization Act of 2014. NACD strongly supports passage of this legislation because it provides simple improvements to the STB to more efficiently and equitably investigate complaints and adjudicate rail rate disputes.

Caliper Tip of the Week: Use the 'Gentle Nudge' Approach
Caliper, an NACD Strategic Partner, offers a number of resources to NACD members on talent recruitment and enhancing workplace performance. In its "10 Tips to Becoming a Better Manager," Caliper advises that when you notice a potential problem don't wait until it becomes an actual one. Nip it in the bud with a casual, but strong, comment about your concern. For example, if an employee is beginning to make a habit of coming in late, you may want to stop him or her in the hall and say, "I noticed you've been having some trouble making it in on time. If there's a problem, let me know and we can talk about it. Otherwise, I just wanted to remind you that we start at 8." This way you don't blow a minor concern out of proportion and you can still keep it from escalating into something major.

Preparation for Effective Leadership Begins with 5 Simple Rules
The Roman philosopher Seneca believed that we are able to create our own fortune. "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity" he famously said. A leader's responsibility is to help their organization and the people they serve to grow and prosper — this is how you earn serendipity. Successful leadership is the ability to create and sustain enough momentum to assure that the marketplace and competitors don't pass you by. This requires leaders to prepare for the future, while equally staying on point with the present.
