New Blog Post: Toxic Politics and TSCA: Nearly Four Decades of Bad Policy
In 1976, President Gerald Ford signed into law the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Next week marks its 38th year as the primary vehicle overseeing the safety of chemicals. TSCA regulates the introduction of new as well as existing chemicals, with the stated intention of protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury to health or the environment. After nearly four decades, it is apparent the law has failed in its principal task and is in desperate need of reform.

Caliper Tip of the Week: Build Your Team
Our sixth tip from Caliper is about team building: you can't just tell people they are a team and expect them to perform like one. They need to understand the purpose of the team and believe the team is capable of producing more than the individual members. They also need to know what talents each member is bringing to the team so each person understands how they are expected to contribute. Be sure you treat the group as a team and reward them for working together rather than rewarding individual accomplishments. Don't hesitate to get help with team building if you're uncertain about how to get people on the same page, working together toward a common goal.

How Do We Avoid The Problem of Too Much Focus?
Focus is good, right? For years we have been admonished as managers to maintain focus: design strategies centered around focused factories that produce better goods less expensively, weed out the product line, grow a business from its core competency, develop priorities and address the first two or three, and organize our time so that we can concentrate on complex issues without interruption. But sometimes focus can be detrimental to our health, both individually and organizationally.

Entrepreneurs Who Cash Out Look For Meaningful Second Acts
The New York Times
In 2009, Jonathan Carson and his business partner, Eric Kurtzman, sold their company, KCC, for more than $100 million. They both signed three-year contracts to continue managing the business, a web platform based in Los Angeles that was meant to make the process of restructuring through Chapter 11 bankruptcy more efficient. But after his contract expired in 2012, Carson found it difficult to continue an entrepreneurial approach within the confines of a large public company, and he decided to move on. The transition had him asking himself questions he had never considered: If he was no longer a business owner, what was he?

There is nothing wrong with making a mistake. It's what you say to yourself after you mess up that matters. When it comes to self-talk, there are six common, yet toxic, beliefs that hold people back more than any others. Be mindful of your tendencies to succumb to these beliefs, so that they don't derail your career.
