Legislative update: NACD urges supercommittee to go beyond mandate to reduce debt

NACD has joined 154 other business organizations in sending a letter to the members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction urging them to go beyond the legislative mandate to achieve savings of $1.2 to $1.5 trillion. The letter specifically urges the committee to reform entitlement programs and comprehensively restructure the U.S. tax code. More

Regulatory update: OSHA announces inspection plan for high-hazard workplaces

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently issued its annual inspection plan under the Site-Specific Targeting program to help direct enforcement resources to high-hazard resources where the highest rates of injuries and illnesses occur. For the 2011 plan, establishments with 20 or more employees are subject to the inspections, a reduction from the 40-or-more-employees number of previous years. More

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced a series of 11 listening sessions to be held throughout the country on its Ammonium Nitrate Security Program proposed rule that was published Aug. 3. These sessions will provide the public with the opportunity to be briefed on the elements the proposal and to provide comments directly to DHS officials. More

Regulatory update: Chemical Safety Board releases report and video on 2010 Dupont incidents

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board recently released its final report on a series of three incidents that occurred at a DuPont facility in Belle, W.Va., in January 2010, including a release of phosgene that killed one worker. The CSB found that the phosgene hose that burst was supposed to have been changed at least once a month, but had been in service for seven months. More

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has launched a "Greener Products" website to assist consumers, retailers, industrial purchasers and manufacturers in identifying products that use less energy, water or toxic chemicals, or that have other environmentally beneficial attributes. The site allows users to search for EPA programs that are related to greener products based on the type of user and their specific product interests. More

Truckload carriers taking accessorial charges to shippers

More than two-thirds of truckload carriers plan more use of accessorial charges, adding income from shipping fees to higher rates, Transport Capital Partners said. The consulting firm said 68 percent of the carriers it surveyed in the third quarter plan to renegotiate accessorial fees across more categories with shippers. Those accessorial fees include detention charges, mentioned by 42 percent of carriers, and fuel surcharges, which 39 percent of the carriers hoped to renegotiate. More
