NADRA chapter update
'The Perfect Crew Size' by NADRA member David Elenbaum
Whatever the typical job size for a deck contractor is varies but all contractors deal with the same decision. How many guys should I send out? Running different size crews for different size jobs is usually in the cards but sometimes the workload doesn't come in the right order. You might end up with four 16 x 20 quickie treated decks to build this week, projects that would not support a four-man crew that typically builds your porches and big composites. Four decks in a week these days is a blessing for many guys, but if it's just you and a helper running your production, now you're out three weeks or more. In either case depending on how much you sold those decks for, you may have a profit disaster on your hands or worse, a production disaster. I've always maintained that one of the best ways to sell a deck for your competition is to have too much or too little lead-time. Managing crew size and efficiency is essential to the health of your business. So what is the perfect crew size? More

Estimating the hard stuff
When times are tough, competition is hard, margins are tight, and the cost of materials — especially fuel for the equipment — is in constant flux, making profitable estimates even more important. Contractors have depended on software to enhance their estimator's work for decades but each segment of the industry has unique requirements, making a universal solution impossible. But vendors are developing solutions that address both the general estimating needs of construction and the subsets that come with individual specialties. More

While the division between personal profile accounts and public pages seemed like the perfect answer for individuals keen to separate their personal and public lives, for many people using Facebook for professional purposes, these two offerings just added to the digital confusion. Almost anybody can sail a company through good times; it's the rare leader who can guide it through a long and discouraging storm. And don't look for things to clear up soon — the "lingering financial crisis fallout" and "ongoing household deleveraging," which RBC Wealth Management notes in its first Global Insight Weekly report of the year, is leading many economists to believe the U.S. economy will struggle for years to come. The wrath of a great leader
Average leaders focus on results, and that's it. Good leaders focus also on the behaviors that will get the results. And great leaders focus, in addition, on the emotions that will drive these behaviors. One emotion that shapes our behavior is anger, and Martin Luther King Jr., whose 83rd birthday would have been Jan. 15, knew of the power that came packed in this emotion. More
