Deck collapse sends 3 to hospital

A deck at the back of a residence in Deer Lake, Pa., collapsed, sending three people to the hospital, according to a supervisor at Schuylkill County Communications. Yellow caution tape was up, closing off access to the backyard, but the collapsed deck was visable from the street. More

Deck railing is one of the most expensive parts of building any deck, and subject to the most scrutiny by building inspectors. This is for good reason. You don't want a child to get caught in the railing or fall off the deck because they were climbing on the railing. Bioplastics production to hit 1 million tons

Total global production of biobased plastics will reach 1 million metric tons annually within a few years, up from about 700,000-800,000 metric tons, according to Michael Carus, managing director of the Nova-Institut GmbH. Manufacturers are increasingly turning towards biomaterials not only to reduce carbon dioxide, but also to save fossil resources, Carus said at the Biobased Based Materials Symposium. More

The Riegelmann Boardwalk on Coney Island opened in 1923. Over time, the city said, traffic from visitors and emergency vehicles has caused maintenance costs to soar. Three years ago the parks department caused local outrage when it began replacing sections of the wooden boardwalk with less costly concrete. The city plans to use recycled plastic lumber alongside the concrete in another section. More
