The 6 traits of a successful small business owner
There is no magic formula for small business success, but most owners who do well share the same six personality traits, according to a new report. The Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute report hopes to explain why only 1 in 2 small businesses will survive more than five years, according to Small Business Administration figures.
The study - called Six Dimensions That Characterize Success-Oriented Small Business Owners - is based on analysis of a survey of 1,100 small businesses with between 2 and 99 employees. More
Measuring sales effectiveness
For Construction Pros Share
The key to selling for many companies in the construction industry is to sell the performance of the professionals in the firm because that is primarily what the customer is buying. No matter what you are selling your sales team is responsible for educating your customers about the company's offerings and the strength of the company in filling their needs. Sales, whether handled by an individual or a team, is the face of the company and like any other areas of the company it is important to measure its effectiveness. More
Competitive intelligence: Fighting with a sword

"Recession?" declares Rick Pogue, general manager of Arrowhead Building Supply. "We chose not to participate in it. Everyone is looking for ways to cut costs, but we take a different approach. Arrowhead fights with a sword, not a shield." So April was as good a time as any to expand to a fifth St. Louis-area location, this one in Hollister, Mo. More
Construction dips, lumber prices plunge
The Orange County Register Share
The cost of lumber and construction panels for a 2,116-square-foot home decreased 35 percent since April, according to the Crow's Construction Materials Cost Index. The dramatic drop came after a steep run-up in pricing in the first three months of the year, Crow's said. More
Home sales and building slowed in May
The New York Times Share
A record drop in pending home sales and a slowdown in the construction market contributed to a sluggish outlook for the economy, highlighting the significance of government stimulus measures and job growth. The economic indicators were the latest features that economists and analysts used to gauge the pace of the economic recovery.
But all eyes are on the monthly employment figures scheduled for release Friday, which are expected to show a net loss of 125,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in June, and an unemployment rate of 9.8 percent, compared with 9.7 percent in May. More
Studies in sustainability: Wood is demonstrating its green credentials by example
Building Products Online Share
There can be no doubt today that the sustainability movement and green building in particular are here to stay. Green building criteria are, in fact, now codified in numerous building codes and national standards, and increasing numbers of local jurisdictions are adopting green building requirements.
Nor can there remain much doubt-given both the objective data and a growing body of real world case studies-that wood, and engineered wood in particular, can and does make an important contribution to the worthy goals of sustainability and green building.
The common sense and scientific support for the green credentials of wood is substantial, long-standing, and well documented. More
Several hurt in Georgia deck collapse
My Fox Atlanta Share
Several people are recovering this week after a deck collapse in Marietta. Officials say it happened at a Fourth of July celebration, and at least five people went to the hospital with injuries. Cobb fire officials say the victims, who were all adults, were having a cookout on Sunday night when the deck they were standing on suddenly collapsed. That sent them crashing 10 feet to the ground. Investigators say the deck pulled away from a wall and then fell back toward the home, landing on top of the victims. More
