Letter from Jen Sheridan, NADRA NJ Chapter D4S Chair:
I hope you are all beating the heat and having a wonderful summer!
I know a bunch of us had an overwhelming response to helping out a soldier whom lost both legs to a roadside bomb in Afghanistan when we first heard about it at a previous NADRA meeting. Yes, I do know this is our busy time of the year and believe me, I could use an extra few hours, let alone a few days. However, I plan to help out no matter what. This soldier sacrificed his life for OUR freedom. One or two days out of my life fails to compare to what Lt. Colin Pascik (23 years old) gave up to keep America safe. More
NADRA Member Boston Cedar adds social media platform
NADRA Blog Share
Boston Cedar is pleased to announce that the company has launched a custom social media platform. "This key initiative will continue to become an integral part of the overall marketing strategy for the company going forward," said Paul Colliton, Boston Cedar's Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
For the foreseeable future, a significant number of businesses will get by just fine with simple telephone calls, emails and faxes. However with the onslaught of new social networking sites and the proliferation of "Smart Phones," being constantly connected with new information becomes almost addictive, especially for younger adults. The very powerful and well-connected Millennial Generation likes to stay in touch and sharing information within their "community" is important in their personal and career lives. More

Attention ALL Colorado decking professionals!
The Colorado Chapter, Inc. of the International Code Council invites you to their next meeting!
The Colorado Chapter of the ICC has opened their next meeting to you. The second day of the two-day meeting will include a deck construction course taught by NADRA's technical advisor, Glenn Mathewson. See HERE for more details.
When: Thursday and Friday August 11-12 (Friday includes deck course)
Where: Calrion Hotel, 14378 Hwy 34, Fort Morgan, Colo., 80701
Registration: $30 per person, per day - due at door. Includes lunch and breaks!
What: This six-hour presentation is designed primarily for code professionals in mind, but will be beneficial to all those in the decking industry. The presentation includes discussion about how a deck can affect the structure it serves, new code provisions in the 2009 IRC, and an update about the industry as a whole...an attempt to de-mystify code professionals in regard to decks and code. You can bet I've got 30 minutes dedicated solely to discussing the lateral load anchor, how it got in the code, and what to do with it. What better way is there for a deck builder to learn the code than to be sitting next to those in charge of approving it!
RSVP: Glenn Mathewson, GlennMathewson@NADRA.org
*** NADRA would like to thank the City of Westminster for sponsoring Glenn's time to speak to the CO Chapter of the ICC & NADRA members! More
Marketing Tips: Staying focused
Adrienne Zoble Associates, Inc. Share
Adrienne Zoble is sick and tired of marketing getting a bad rap. People say constantly that marketing is too expensive, marketing takes a long, uninterrupted block of time to handle, and that marketing takes forever to work. None of these statements are true. The reason people believe them is because they're not focused in their marketing efforts. More
Hit the deck: Homeowners get more creative with outdoor living areas
The State Journal-Register Share
It wasn't that long ago when the outdoor deck was a simple structure. Built off a back door in a rectangular shape, the wooden slab was usually big enough for a table and chairs, with a little extra space for lying out in the sun. Those who wanted to get fancy could add an umbrella to the table or erect some bamboo tiki torches for that tropical look. Like most things home-related, decks have undergone a transformation. More
Decks worth their weight in your wallet
London Free Press Share
If you hear hammers and chop-saws in the neighborhood this morning, chances are that someone's building a deck. There's no better mood booster than the smell of fresh lumber, and that's only one of the benefits of deck-building. According to a 2008 Appraisal Institute of Canada survey, homeowners can receive a 50-75 percent return on investment with deck additions. More

Builders get new dress code for construction sites
Aberdeen Press and Journal via For Construction Pros Share
Construction workers should "cover up and slap on the sun block" this summer, the Society of Occupational Medicine has warned. The warning comes as research published in the scientific journal Occupational Medicine shows skin cancer in construction workers could be as common as asbestos-related disease. More
Health care vigilance for workers a must in heat
Tulsa World Share
The prolonged extreme heat that's been troubling for people across the country represents potential trouble for employers as well. Companies need to keep their businesses going, but at the same time should take precautions to safeguard workers. That can be harder than it might appear at first glance. While some folks work in an air conditioned office, many are not so lucky. Businesses in the manufacturing, assembly, construction and repair industries often have no choice but to face the heat full-on. More
Digital filing for bids
Profitability in the construction industry relies on accurate bidding and estimating; and this often requires the right technology solution. As more software solutions for construction populate the marketplace, those that continue to evolve and expand functionality across the construction job cycle provide more value to contractors. More
Sustainable construction comes with risk
ThomasNet News Share
Innovative green building designs and materials are becoming more commonplace. While these advancements should be held in high regard and adopted where it makes sense, there's also a small caveat attached with regards to insurance and inspection codes. Will this risk diminish outside the box thinking? More
